Legend has it that Bob Seger answered this question in a radio interview in 2004, stating that the song was "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, produced by Phil Specter. I've never seen an link to a transcript or an exact detailing of the radio program, air date, etc.
Perhaps it is true, but as one of the sources notes, "Be My Baby" wasn't recorded until 1963. Artistic license, I suppose.
I haven't seen anyone deny the choice or offer another, so while it may be a rumor, nothing but a myth, it's a pretty nice one, as it is a very hummable tune.
