Why is the Writers Guild of America protesting American Idol?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The WGA is suggesting that the writers and other workers on Idol do not get the standard benefits that most other writers and staffers who make shows successful receive. It sounds like an issue with reality shows having a gray area where they might not feel they need to extend certain benefits because they aren't utilizing the same services that are providers by writers, etc., on sitcoms or dramas. But the WGA feels the people who hold those jobs on reality shows like Idol are having more and more of a role in the shows' success and should be compensated accordingly.

Reality shows and game shows are often referred to as "unscripted television" within the entertainment industry. However, that does not mean writers are not involved with those types of programs. Regarding the ''American Idol'' strike, WGAW (Writers Guild of America West) president Patric Verrone says, "We've got men and women writing reality and game shows for a lot of very successful companies and not getting the basic protections -- pension, health insurance, credits and things -- that writers in this town routinely get. We're hoping we can achieve that with Fremantle." Freemantle produces ''American Idol''
