West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd has died....
West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd (D) has died in a Fairfax, VA hospital. Senator Byrd was 92 years old and was the longest serving U.S. Representative, having been elected to the Congress in 1952 and elected to the Senate in 1958. He never lost an election in West Virginia. He was the head of the Senate Appropriations Committee and was third in line in succession to the presidency, behind Nancy Pelosi. He was the oldest member of Representatives. He was a member of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1940's, which he said later that he regretted.
How do you think his passing will affect the Senate and their votes on issues? Is this the end of an era of unlimited terms for Senate (he was elected to 9 six year terms)? Combined with the death of Senator Edward Kennedy will the Senate be taking on a new face moving away from the old traditions of the past? What do you think?
