Were there more murder-suicides in 2008 compared to years prior? How about 2009?

People keep referring to this as a trend, but I don't know how many were happening before. I hope that people aren't really offing their whole families because of the economy, but I can't find any statistics on this that might point one way or the other.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In the first half of 2005 there were 591 murder-suicides and 554 in the first half of 2007. There do not appear to be any published statistics for 2008 or 2009 at this time. The Violence Policy Center does seem to be the only organization that is collecting and publishing information on this topic. In their report, American Roulette, 3rd edition, they report that there were 554 murder-suicide deaths, of which 234 were suicides and 320 were homicides from Jan 1, 2007 to June 30, 2007. The Violence Policy Center conducted this study and then doubled that amount to get a estimate of 1,108 murder-suicides during 2007. This compares to their 2nd edition of this report in 2006 with 591 murder-suicide deaths during the first half of 2005, of which 264 were suicides and 327 were homicides and an estimate of 1,182 murder-suicide deaths for the year in 2005.

I tried to find these statistics, but had no luck.
What I did find at
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2005/mar2005/side-m16.shtml

No more recent figures are available. Due to political pressure from the gun lobby and other right-wing groups, no government agency compiles centralized statistics on either suicides or homicides involving firearms.

The most information is compiled by social worker on this site.

It does seem like a trend, but without specific stats, it's hard to say!

Yeah, they ARE hard to find, huh? I don't know that it's the gun lobby, but it sure is a tough set of stats to find. I also found this site, which seems to say that there were LESS murder/suicides in 2007 than there were in 2002, but that doesn't help all that much.

Thanks, though!
