I was tending bar on a busy Saturday night and while I was hand washing some tall pilsner glasses to prepare for the rush one of the glasses lost a foot, so to say, the remaining shard of glass went clear through my hand.
This upset some people as blood went everywhere.
In the coming week I had orthopaedic surgery to repair 5 tendons in my right hand. I was out of work for 11 months as I underwent some pretty extreme physical therapy to get my dominant hand to work correctly again.
My surgeon as well as my physical therapist were excellent and I have now 8 years later only a Z shaped scar on my palm and a straight scar on the other side.
It was determined that overall I had permanently lost 7% usage of my right hand so in the end things could have been a lot worse
My surgeon was Dr. Robert J. Heaps MD

• Theres alot of detail in this answer. And I've had hand problems myself, so I'm empathetic.

Yes. Several. 3 of them were lifesaving. c-section ... etc ... bilateral hand carpal ligament release. Thank goodness there are excellent doctors in major medical centers in major cities! I hope you had a good otolaryngologist and kept all or most of your hearing!

I broke my nose five years ago when I fell face first into a rock playing capture the flag in a construction area (don't ask). I had surgery to get it restraightened and so I could breathe better two years ago. I had a giant cast on my nose for three weeks. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease if you know what I mean, at least for a while.

After a number of years being misdiagnosed, I was finally given a correct diagnosis. Sadly, the correct diagnosis came a few years to late avoid major surgery. I had a 3 hours surgery, received 19 staples along my lower abdomen and now I have a pretty ugly scar on my lower belly. I wish I'd asked more questions about scaring and incision size. I understand that there are things doctors can do to reduce scarring and decrease healing time. In addition to a big, ugly scar, 9 years later I still have no sensation on the skin on and around my scar. Also, just in case anyone is having surgery on their abdomen.... if the doctor orders you to walk after surgery, DO IT! I didn't after the first surgery and I was miserable. Turns out, when doctors operate on your belly, they frequently fill your abdomen with some kind of gas to create space. At the risk of being indelicate... you don't know what uncomfortable is until you've had a gas pain in your shoulder or some other weird and unexpected place. Recently, I had a similar surgery and followed the instructions and the difference was IMMEASURABLY better!
