What are the best settings to create a DivX file from a DVD (and look like the "pros")

Trying to rip a DVD of my schools musical and send it to the other cast members, and I want to create a nice DivX rip that's in great quality and decent filesize (that people can download from the web). What are the best settings to use to get the results I would like... you know like the "pros" in the "scene" might use. And just to make it all the more frustrating, I'm on a mac.

Use Handbrake (free) on the Mac. I'd go with the iPhone preset and render a version. Based on quality of the output, you can then re-rip and either set target size (to make it even smaller) or the bit rate. To make it widely viewable, you might want to choose AVI (and the MPEG-4) decoder over mo4 (based on h.264), even although h.264 will produce better quality.

If I were you, I would just rip the first 5 minutes, then play with these settings until you get the best balance between quality and file size. A lot will depend on the quality of the source material...

Another program to use is Visual Hub, but it just got discontinued... It's more of a transcoder, though

I've used handbrake for my iPod rips before, but have haven't really used it for Divx/Xvid. I dont want iPod format, I specifically want a divx/xvid file so that it is widely usable.

the last time I tried using handbrake for divx the results were rather crappy and I figured it was because I didn't know what the best settings are...

For DivX/xvid, I rather use Visual Hub. Frankly, Visual Hub delivers superb results, if you transcode into Flash format -- we use that to put stuff up on the web. Even better than divx or mp4.

How big is your movie? How many minutes? Will you put it up on the web or rather burn it on DVDs? And are recipients supposed to play it back from a DVD player, a web browser or something else?

You could check out the site below, there are a bunch of video conversion guides, some of which may be Mac-specific but I'm off hand not sure.
