Heh, perfect example to do what? What would you like to achieve with your first jQuery script? I ask because jQuery is very versatile and can do many different things.
jQuery is pretty easy to pick up if you know JavaScript. If you don't know any JavaScript, I recommend you pick up a copy of "Dom Scripting" by Jeremy Keith http://www.domscripting.com/book/
You could also check out the basic JavaScript tutorial at http://w3schools.com/js/default.asp and move on to the DOM tutorial http://w3schools.com/htmldom/default.asp
Once you've got some JavaScript under your belt, start with learning some of the basics. This is a great tutorial that will get you doing some simple things quickly: http://www.webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/jquery-tutorials-for-designers/
Ultimately though, once you understand the basics of jQuery and how the chaining effect works, you should have a good read through the official jQuery documentation http://docs.jquery.com/Main_Page as there is some really good stuff to be found in there.

I recommend going to Delicious.com and using the link I put in the source field. It should be a search result of "JQUERY" against all the most popular URLs saved by Delicious users.
