Whats the best way, short of using a recruiter, to find a good drupal developer who is in LA, CA

Lost trust for the recruiter method... Having trouble finding a really good drupal guy, someone who others go to to get questions answered, not someone I have to hand-hold. Need him in LA or movable. Have tried posting to all the obvious places.

http://drupal.org/ is the Drupal Home Page. I assume that you have already posted the position at the Drupal home page. I would suggest contacting some of the people at Drupal and asking for suggestions for some good Drupal developers who may be interested. Perhaps one of the developers at the company would consider moving over for an interesting and
challenging position. I see that Drupal developers are hired all round the globe. The folks at Drupal may be more likely to know of someone who does not need a job and is therefore not actively looking, but who may have an interest in returning to the country or moving to the Los Angeles area and could give you contact information for them. You may also be able to find out who is doing the best and most innovative or whatever quality
you are looking for in a Drupal developer so that you can check out their work on a web site and if they are recommended to contact them to see if they are interested.

So a good question to ask might be who is doing Drupal work that you admire? If you contact that person, and they are not interested in your position, who could they recommend that also does exceptional work who might be interested? With that contact, you may also be able to run prospective names by them to see whether the person you are thinking of considering is considered a high quality Drupal developer by that expert.

Is Drupal taught by anyone from Drupal in workshops or courses or online or locally or globally? I would ask that person who they may recommend from their workshops that really knows the topic. They must run some kind of updating workshop at conferences, onsite, etc. A workshop leader usually knows who the people are who can answer all the questions from
the audience that they can't :) I found a photo from an L.A. Drupal camp below.

If Drupal is used extensively or taught at any academic institutions locally, perhaps the instructor can point you in the direction of a gifted past graduate who may be keeping in touch with them.

If there is a local or national computer conference where Drupal developers may be attending, can you network there and find out a consensus of the people there - who is a great Drupal person?
eg. the upcoming MacWorld conference nearby in San Francisco may have people there who are qualified to judge Drupal developers and recommend some to you. Is there a Drupal booth going to be there?
Can you find out from the exhibitors if anyone is knowledgeable who may be interested.
Often there are job fairs at conferences where you can interview onsite or browse resumes.

Here is the MacWorld link for this year http://www.macworldexpo.com/ You may be able to attend workshops by Drupal developers or for Drupal developers giving you a concentration of people to check out
or ask for recommendations from. Talking to others that know the person and their work can help you choose someone who is not only highly capable, but also likely to be compatible with the type of setting you have.

Are you wanting to hire someone under you or contract out with another company to get it done?

Well you're starting in the right place. The person you're looking for is a persistent web user, and so looking for them online is definitely better than using an offline recruiter.

Keep an eye on Twitter to see what people are saying about Drupal in your area. In the sources I've included a link to Twitter Search that will always give you the latest updates containing the word "drupal" within 15 miles of Los Angeles, CA. From these results you should be able to tell who knows what they're talking about. Message them and ask if they're able to do what you are looking for or if they're able to recommend someone.

Also, regularly check upcoming.yahoo.com for web-related events in the area. They're usually a great way to network in a laid-back, social atmosphere. The folks at some of these events will be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

Good luck!

You might invest in employer level membership to a site like Monster.com or something similar. May be several hundred dollars (I don't know).. but if you compare that to the amount you will end up paying your contractor, its peanuts and that would give you a huge pool of talent.

Why do you think that you need someone local? I actually think if you are willing to pay $20-25/hr you can get someone with good English skills from odesk.com.. they won't be local.. unless you wanted to pay more like $30+/hr then there are some U.S. developers on odesk too.

Also what is your drupal question? I am not familiar with drupal but I have been coding since I was seven and I am very good at looking stuff up.. I could probably answer your questions just as well as anyone you find to contract. Try me.

When it comes to web development you still have pretty good luck using the services over at Craigslist. With the current economic state of the country there are a lot of eyes that pay attention to that site.

Networking. Contact me, I know some of a Drupal developer in California near Los Angeles or about 3 hours North. He wants me to hire him, and I found him on Guru.com. He claims to have a team of people who are experts in Drupal and they are all Cal Poly grads. Seems like this is the guy you need to talk to. I am exploring a few options, so even if I do not hire this guy, I would gladly recommend him to you, as I've seen his work. I can email you the link to his website and have him contact you.

I know a good company that's in canada, but they work over the internet. If you're familiar with twit.tv's site, they did it. Their website is arktyp.ca .
Best of luck, and when your site goes up, tweet it to me, i'm chilkotardis on twitter.
