What is the best way for me to put a panning image on my website?

I like to photograph sunsets and other wide vistas.

I've found that stitching a series of photos together (photomerge in photoshop) will allow me create a very wide image.

I'd like to put these images up for display on my website. In the past, I've seen some folks use flash to load the image and when the page loads automatically start to pan the image. I like that.

What is the best way to do this?

Ideally, I'm looking for some sort of a flash widget that will read an XML file to obtain the image file name that I would like displayed. QTVR controls (the little moving arrow control thing in qtvr) is a plus but autopanning on page load is a requirement.

Hey Rob, have you checked out GigaPan? http://gigapan.org/index.php

Personally, I haven't tried stitching yet, but I'm looking into it... digital cameras make it relatively convenient.

Panoramic Software Links:
- Panoguide.com - General site with technical advice and software reviews.
The Panorama factory - Stitching software, $35 or $60, depending on version.
- Panavue - Another highly recommended stitching package, $64.
- PTGui - (Panorama Tools Graphic User Interface) is a front-end for Helmut Dersch's free Panorama Tools stitching software. $55.

I found this program code on a blog sometime ago, but haven't tried it myself.

"Zoom & Pan Image Display"
http://lassieadventurestudio.wordpress.com/2009/04/08/zoom-pan-image/

Then, there's "Interactive Pan Flash Movie tutorial by R. Berdan"

http://www.ebookmanual.net/interactive-pan-flash-movie-tutorial-by-r-berdan.html

...includes a link to a PDF version.

Good Luck!

Nice! Thanks.

I'm still hoping for something that is flash (this one is javascript) but I've rarely seen a tutorial as well put together as this one. Thank-you Galaxy!!!!

You might want to take a look at Shiftzoom.js http://www.netzgesta.de/shiftzoom/ It has the functionality I think you are looking for and has the advantage of not being flash which means it will work on the iPhone and on systems where flash may be blocked. The API is feature rich and as long as you are comfortable doing some javascript programming it looks like a good option.

I went so far as to download and test this one out. Sadly, the code is slooooooooow and it doesn't appear to be compatible with the browsers I need it to be. Also, this is a javascript solution where in an ideal world, I'd like something that is flash.

Thanks WDawe! I sure appreciate the reply.

You should look at JParallax, it's a JQuery plugin.

Here's more on it.

Very cool portfolio at that example. That guy is Pro (yeah, with the capital P).

Sadly, this one is complicated and I'm scared that if I implement this that it'll be hard to debug. One of the reasons that I'm hoping for a flash solution is that it would be dead easy to debug if anything went wrong with it.

Thanks though, E. If you come across anything in your travels, keep me in mind and I'll toss you the tip regardless of best answer on this one.

I wish I could be more helpful than this, I looked through to try a perfect example of what you are looking for, but I am not 100% sure what you need.

Here are my attempts for what I thought you were looking for:

Check out the Image Viewers here: http://flashden.net/category/image-viewers-galleries . There is a great number of options that I think will help you.

Wow! I'm glad to hear that I'm not out in left field here, Orange. We've came across the same two possibilities over at flashden.

The "ultimate-image-and-swf-panning" is pretty close to what I need. I've wrote into their message forum and found that the code doesn't autopan. Too bad because everything else fits. http://forum.oxylusflash.com/ultimate-image-swf-panning-controls/1554-autopanning-resizging-controls.html#post4917

Same thing, Orange... thanks a lot for your help. I'm deeply searching for this and if in your travels you come across anything else please let me know. I'll tip regardless of best answer if this question expires.

I am in the process of helping find the pan feature included with manual controls, waiting to hear back from a friend.

Here is an XML, with auto pan feature though: http://www.flashden.net/item/xml-slideshow-with-ken-burns-effect/32354
