Anchor Text is text that tells search engines what your article is about.

Many times you might here about website optimization. Anchor text is one form of optimization that make web crawlers find your page(s). Anchor text is a must when trying to get pageviews for your website. One of the main goals is to insure that you have good keyword density within your website. Inclusion of important keywords within the anchor text will make a big difference in the ranking of your site pages.

Anchor text is one word or a string of words that describes the link it's "anchored" to. You see them every time words are highlighted blue (or any color different from the background page, but it's usually blue), and your cursor arrow turns into a hand when you place it over the text, which tells you that it's a link.

Anchor text is used not just to give the reader a clue of what the website is about before they click the link; it's also used as a way of telling search engine robots what the site/page is about in order to get it ranked on the first page of search results when someone types that anchor text as a search word/phrase at a search engine site like Google.
