There are a couple of software options available.
I would recommend Citation Software.
Each of the Web-to-print systems that we offer has different features & capabilities, and each has a different pricing plan. We focus on matching the customer with the solution that best fits that customer's budget and technical needs. We offer this service FREE OF CHARGE.

Web-to-Print technology is young, and some companies are offering Web-to-Print systems that don't work very well.
Citation has been involved with on-demand printing and variable-data printing since the 1980s, and because of that we know what to look for in a Web-to-print system when it comes to quality and value.
We partner with companies that have well-designed, robust systems that are based on mature technology and are reasonably priced.
Unlike most other companies that offer Web-to-print technology, our company makes available more than one Web-to-print solution, instead of just one. When we're consulting with a potential customer, we remain vendor-neutral and focus on the customer's needs and goals.
As mentioned above, our consulting service is FREE! (We are compensated by the solution providers that we represent.)
As well as...
1.) Web To Print supports:
Business Cards, Greeting Cards, Envelopes. Letterhead, Flyers,
Post Cards, Vinyl Stickers, Indoor Color Stickers, Outdoor Color Stickers,
Vehicle Magnets, Invitations, Banners, Posters, Door Hangers, Calendars
& more.

You can also add a Zazzle widget different places. Zazzle and Cafe Press seem to have been around the longest and are well known, yet there are certainly others out there. Zazzle has an API which you can check out at http://www.zazzle.com/api
Of course there are other solutions to this:
DecoNetwork
http://www.deconetwork.com
Create your own store.
CafePress
http://www.cafepress.com
Photoworks
http://www.photoworks.com
Kodak Gallery
http://www.kodakgallery.com
Shutterfly
http://www.shutterfly.com
Moo
http://www.moo.com
There is a list of custom product and gift companies below...What I like about Zazzle was they had the greatest selection of products that can be customized and they have the customization widgets, tools, and API built. Also, they handle all the fulfillment and storage of the products, and they seem to have quality products.
If you are looking to customize books, sites like Blurb.com and Inkubook.com make customizable books.
This is a good article about custom made products: http://www.trendwatching.com/trends/customer-made.htm
There are a lot of links that I have collected here at this ShareTabs link: http://www.sharetabs.com/?customproducts
Hope this helps Chumley!

Is there Web to Print software available that enables users to customize items in the browser (Zazzle etc)?
I'm looking for software that lets people personalize items like T-Shirts, Party Invites, Mugs etc in your Web browser,
similar to software used by sites like spreadshirt.net and Zazzle.com
Is there an 'out of the box' software solution available that does this type of thing? Thanks!

Yes, I've done a lot of research on this area of customization. There is something new called Pikistore, and you can create your own store with it at http://www.pikistore.com You can also add a Zazzle widget different places. Zazzle and Cafe Press seem to have been around the longest and are well known, yet there are certainly others out there. Zazzle has an API which you can check out at http://www.zazzle.com/api
