It depends on the url shortening service.
Some services change the referrer or redirect with a true 301 so the search engine / analytics never really knows the difference. Some services (the evil ones) leave their referrer information in place on the redirect and hide the actual click path.

How does Google Analytics report shortened URL's?
I'm curious how Google Analytics reports clicks from shortened URL's. For example, how would it report where the viewer came from if they clicked on a shortened URL from twitter.com? How would it report if that shortened URL was clicked from a twitter application such as TweetDeck?

While this is an interesting link and a good way of tracking shortened URL's it does not really answer the question as to how Google Analytics reports shortened URL's. I personally use bit.ly or diggbar for tracking, but this only works if you create the shortened URL it will not help if you are trying to track if others are using shortened URL's to send people to your site.
