Hi SJForster!

1)
There are some good ecard options here:
http://www.hotscripts.com/category/php/scripts-programs/postcards/

Check out that list. There are a lot of options and if you have a few features in mind, I bet you'll be able to find a good option there.

2)
Specifically, if you'd like to sell your ecards, this program has the ability built-in:
http://www.ecardmax.com/index.php?step=eCardAjax&gad=CNGmuvUCEgiNiCeCIzcb-BjllbT-AyD9ooMq
Although, it does cost $150 and that seems rather expensive to me. However, if you think that you could sell even a few cards, this good system could easily pay for itself.

This here is my favorite system: http://www.gregphoto.net/gcards/index.php
It doesn't cost anything, uses php & mySQL (with an easy installer) and integrates seemlessly into just about any website.

3)
The whole ecard process is pretty easy to understand. If you already use some sort of Content Management System (CMS) or have a good process ot upload photos to your site, it might be best to have something custom coded just for you.

I'd suspect that hiring an outsource programmer from Rentacoder, scriptlance or elance would cost you about $30 for this project.

As a quick side note, if you're not already... selling your photographs as cards on Etsy is a VERY good way to make a little extra money. You can print cards easily at any number of local places and ship them to customers without much hassle at all.

Best of luck with your ecards! I think it's a great way to promote your photographs.

I hope that this was helpful.

Just be careful with ecards -- many viruses are transmitted that way, so you might find that you get a very small clickthrough rate. I pretty much just trash them the minute I see them.

You're right with the level of spam / malware that has been coming through e-mail disquised as an ecard.

I've found that a couple of things can help:

1)
Display the ecard inline using HTML encoded MIME messages. Using PHP's graphic libraries, you can overlay custom text in predefined spaces at the bottom, side, top or right on top of photographs.

2)
Trust online is elusive. However, if you carefully validate outgoing email addresses, ensure that the user knows it is important to use their real name and also display links to your privacy policy and no-spam group affiliation, you stand a good chance of a clickthrough.

For the most part, these measures are not needed. Peek at your CTR (click through ratio) from time to time, but (for good or bad) most folks don't have a problem clicking through a card that is labeled with the name of a friend.

Oh, another idea for you SJForester:

Don't forget about facebook. It would be easy for a web developer from one of the outsource sites to make a quick facebook app to send your photographs as ecards in that system.

Facebook really is the most popular way to send ecard type things right now and combined with a professional profile highlighting your photography, you could really make a go of this one.
