Well, if you are trying to get into freelance writing, use your own name. e.g., www.stevesmith.com or susiejones.com. That way, any client that you have will easily be able to find you.
On the other hand, if you're writing a freelance writing column, and trying to attract freelance writers to come, then something else that would identify your strengths would be best. So, what are your strengths? What are you trying to say? Use that to pick a domain name.

Need a memorable yet catchy name for a freelance writer website. Must be a dot-com, not contain hyphens etc...it also needs to actually be available for purchase at a reasonable price.

It really depends on who your target audience is. I think you want to use a name that they (the audience) will remember, because it is relevant to them. For example, if you are writing mostly about conservation, then something like "savetheplanet.com" or "hugatree.com" (both taken, by the way).

Whatever you choose, make sure it passes the parking lot test. If you are walking out of a lunch meeting with a potential publisher and he or she asks you what your url is, you should be able to say it without having to spell it. If you have to spell it, they won't remember it.

i agree with duke, simple and can be memorized. however if your goal is to generate business, especially on the internet. using your own name is going to negatively impact you. aim for a website that is also a commonly searched term. www.freelancewriters.com is sure to receive bundles of hits, vs JohnDoe.com.
