What is a good source for web graphics?

I'm looking for a site with graphic content for websites (icons, backgrounds, etc). Or one with tips on how to create them.

Although I have never heard of the site you can check out (http://www.freegraphicsworld.com/) -- Their web site looks organized with some good content. Also, if you are looking for good tutorials, inspiration, free HQ icon sets, etc. check out (smashingmagazine.com)...

• Thanks to all for your suggestions! I wish I could spread the tip.

I had heard of istockphoto and deviantart before, maybe I should have been more specific on what I was looking for and what I already knew was available. I really liked smashingmagazine so the tip goes to the 1st who suggested it :)

For your information, iStock does have icon sets and backgrounds in addition to other photo's. I've used them quite extensively to get high res, vectorized icon sets.

I didn't "google" the answer - I shared my experience.

Negative comments are not needed...try and stay positive fella.

www.iStockPhoto.com

They have a HUGE photo selection and most of the images are reasonably priced. They have vectorized images, as well as multiple sizes for JPEG's. The larger the size, the more the cash.

They also have a huge list of icons, backgrounds, etc...
Good luck!

istockphoto was my first thought too. maybe youanden intended to say he has another idea that he thinks is better instead of telling you you're wrong and accusing you of googling.

Personally, as a web designer, iStockPhoto offers large images, large backgrounds, that sort of thing. I guess it is okay to use someone elses repeating 100x100 gif, but if you are going to use a large image, why use someone else's, for that matter. Who would actually do that? Plus the optimization, the server requirements for a descent latency... iStockPhoto isn't really web-centered... and that's my point. It's not very relevant.

youanden - I hear you on the graphic sizes. Of course you wouldn't use print sized graphics on a website, but iStock does offer much more than just stock, print photo's. They have great icon sets, vectorized images that are very small in file size, but scale up wonderfully.

Sure you have to pay, but it's really not much at all. Anywhere from $1 to $20 per image is a small price to pay for great quality images that fit your needs. The icon sets have many icons on each page, and are not charged independently.

I second the vote for www.istockphoto.com as the best all-around site.

Also, be sure to check out the following blog posts (and their blogs, in general, for that matter) for a few tips and tools:

I frequently visit Smashing Magazine to find the best freebies on the internet (icons, backgrounds, patterns etc).

One easy way to extract icon from application is by using IcoFX.

Also check out the "royalty free photos" section on Web Developer's Handbook.

Has tons of content - backgrounds, icon sets, blog themes and photography, most of it is free to use, and it's all great quality

A lot of the content posted to Flickr is released under a Creative Commons license that allows for free use in certain situations as long as you provide appropriate credit to the original author. That could then be a good source of photos to use, especially if you're on a tight budget.

I use sxc.hu (Stock XCHNG) which offers excellent quality photos that you can use as backgrounds or turn into icons. Also google images is good for finding the type of thing you need (images.google.com). Beyond that, I create my own in my graphics program. I find that a lot of the clipart sites and "web graphics here" sites are not of high enough quality or end up looking cartoonish, which is not what I want in my sites.
