as a professional in the graphic design/animation world, I can tell you that I've read several books and most often they don't offer up much and are usually incredibly confusing. For those reasons, I don't particularly recommend many books on these topics.

As far as websites are concerned, there are several veryd ecent ones around. My favorites include:

www.videocopilot.net - an amazing site full of tons of after effects tutorials, all including step by step videos. the site also has links to purchase dvds full of stock images, animations, effects, sounds, and more. the site also has an extensive blog/forum section full of lots of people offering up advice on the subject of after effects. the site offers mostly advanced tutorials, though the vidfeos help most people figure it out. if you're looking for more beginner type stuff, then I would recommend

www.creativecow.com - another amazing site with tons of contributors offering up their years of expertice across various subjects including after effects, premiere, flash, and numerous other animation/video programs. this site also has an incredibly extensive forum section full of lots of people offering up their advice, as well as an extensive tutorials section, many including videos. the tutorials here can range from basic startup features, to advanced stuff.

those are the two sites I reference most in my line of work whenever I'm stuck for ideas

Thanks a lot for your answer! I already knew most sites mentioned but videocopilot is a discovery and looks like an excellent resource for learning advanced techniques.

You can always try looking on the Dummies Book website, they'll most liklely have the book that you are searching for. Or you can try Barnes & Noble, or Borders.

For Adobe Premiere, I like to browse tutorialized.com. The site itself be a tad disorganized but overall I've learned some great things and it's helped me get a better grasp.

For After Effects I have used: http://msp.sfsu.edu/Instructors/rey/aepage/tutorials.html

as a starting point.

You should probably stick with lynda.com. It works better than most of these options, and I know you all already said that but let me add, that you could get a free 7 day trial to test it out, it is really good. I have included the link. Remember that you can also get more than one trial by just getting another email address. If you decide to pay for it ($25/month) then that's fine too. But you should really give it a try.

The link to the 7-day trial is in the sources section.
