Yes.

Hosting is a good "value add". It's a lot like fries at McDonalds. You can say "would you like hosting with that". Most folks will say yes because they either don't know much about Hosting, they don't want to be bothered with the management, or they just plain out trust you.
Buy a cPanel "reseller" account. You can host as many small sites as you would like.
2)
Unlimited cPanel reseller hosting accounts usually cost about $20 - $30 per month. If you charge 1 customer $20 a month then ALL of your hosting is paid for, including your own! Any sales beyond that 1 customer are profit.
3)
You get paid a monthly fee for web hosting. Some designers that I know simply sell this in yearly blocks so that they don't have to worry about invoicing.
The other option to make money on Hosting is to sign up to become an affiliate or one (or more) hosting companies. Some hosting companies (MediaTemple) pay very well for referrals.
4)
The only downside is support. Even small web hosting will incur some amount of support. You might have to deal with an e-mail problem, domain changes, etc. These things can take a surprising amount of time.
Still, I say yes.... it is well worth it to offer resold web hosting for even mildly technical designers!

I design sites as well, and sell hosting packages to the less sophisticated clients- the ones who I know who won't be accessing anything they shouldn't and overall its worth it. I'm the only one who accesses the back end of their site - they don't even ftp, so I'm not worried about someone trying to change something and crashing it.. But if they had any skills at all, it might not be worth the hassle...
I make enough on hosting to justify the hassle, but not enough if they were to be hands on techie types.. but YMMV.. HTH.

I personally don't think it's worth the time. I make lots of extra spending money on the side by designing small websites for very tiny companies, mostly 'out of the den' businesses which just need a web presence to list their products.

Is it worth the effort for a web designer to resell hosting to clients?
I have a couple of clients that are a little more hands on in the technical side of things who want a turn key solution, and will likely call me if there are problems on the server side of things.

• I guess I kind of asked this question rhetorically, er, to work out the bugs in my head. Your mention of added value is really my intention, not to make extra cash, since I'm selling clients more on the Marketing and SEO side of things, for that. So thank you for helping me clear my head.

If you're an SEO guy... I'm sure that you already know... but there are some really good tactics that you can use when you start hosting a few accounts over a few IP addresses.

Yes, if the person can get the info out to people who want to buy it, no if it would take up to much time for very little money

You have to realize when you start taking their money, they don't know/care that XYZ hosting company in Tokyo went down or is experiencing issues with something they did, all they know is they paid YOU and its YOUR hosting... I design sites as well, and sell hosting packages to the less sophisticated clients- the ones who I know who won't be accessing anything they shouldn't and overall its worth it. Hosting is soo cheap these days that I just don't see how you could possibly manage to make enough profit to warrant the time. You need to consider that whatever happens on the Host, you'll be the one that the companies will be gunning for whenever there are issues, so you have to be very sure about who you pick. I personally don't think it's worth the time. I make lots of extra spending money on the side by designing small websites for very tiny companies, mostly 'out of the den' businesses which just need a web presence to list their products.

Sorry for not mentioning that I'm in California. Good to know about the KSA though.
