In russian KGB stands for Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti which means State Security Committee. It was an all encompassing bureau that oversaw secret police, soviet security and soviet intelligence, a massive information central.

The KGB.com company touts itself as,"the world’s largest independent provider of directory assistance and enhanced information services".

The image seems to be a play on the now defunct organization's name. They call their employees agents and sell merchandise that encourages the association to the name by suggestion, selling items like an agent kit and dark sunglasses.

It stands for Knowledge Generation Bureau and the company was formerly known as INFONXX.

The best guess I've seen (since kgb.com does not have it on their "about kgb" page) is "knowledge generation bureau" but it is not clear if this is official. The company probably has little to do with the intelligence agency of the Soviet Union, except as a pun.

KGB stands for 542, the text equivalent in the cell phone.

-quote-

"kgb is also the biggest and fastest-growing independent wholesale directory assistance service provider in the U.S. In 2009, kgb launched 542542 (kgbkgb), the premier text answer service in the U.S."

-end of quote-

Where is that quoted from.

542 could have been and most likely was chosen after the name and company established themselves.

No large company makes a name from a phone number they receive.
Most likely they chose the 542 number to coincide with the name.

Which leaves the question still what the name means and how/why it was chosen...
