Firefox seems to use a lot of memory, which slows down my computer. Sometimes it uses as much 250,000 k. Why is that and how do I fix it?

Firefox memory use depends on many details. These include how much memory is available on your machine, what plug-ins you have running, how much browsing history you keep, etc. There are also "memory leaks" which are instances where Firefox does not release memory it no longer needs. These memory leaks get fixed when newer versions come out, so you should update to the most recent version available.
A great article on what may cause abnormally high Firefox memory usage, how to diagnose, and how to reduce this problem, is available at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reducing_memory_usage_%28Firefox%29
Once you've done everything they recommend, if your computer is still slow as a result of high memory usage you should consider upgrading your memory (or if the computer is very old, your computer itself).
