We have a Goodman GMP vented multiposition gas furnace. Every year, my husband has to clean a certain connection with sandpaper.

If he doesn't, the heater will quit running normally. This year, he accidentally cleaned the ignition thing (flint like piece) and now the heater won't come on. Being the holiday season, we'd like to avoid paying a huge repair bill. Any HVAC pros out there (or seasoned handy men) who might be able to offer us some direction? Should we just purchase a new ignition thing?

I found an excellent, step-by-step troubleshooting and unit testing guide for your furnace, located here. It notes that the igniters generally only last between 3 - 5 years before needing replacement. And you may purchase replacements for between $25 - $50, here.

Judging by the details provided within the troubleshooting guide, if you've been using the igniter for more than 3 years, purchasing a new one would likely be prudent, even if you eventually determine that it was not the root cause of your heater's issue. That way you'll be prepared and have it on hand for the next emergency.

As long as you take the necessary precautions to avoid electric shock or unintended gas ignition, anyone reasonably handy should be able to follow the diagnostic procedures contained within the repair guide.

It may sounds easy to fix, but I guess there is nothing safe than asking for a professional help. By that, he can also check the heater for any further problems using a cheap test equipment.
