M$Plant wise, you might want to think of putting some ornamental grasses at random places along the side (so they overhang the path a bit). There are some beautiful colors. Or something like a moss or, my favorite, Mondo Grass

Another idea is lighting. Some nice low-voltage lighting might be nice.
I don't like symmetry, so I would put the plants/lights at irregular intervals along the straight path.
