A Hebert box (pronounced AY-bear) is one of two regions of the Atlantic Ocean that are useful as predictors of hurricanes that will strike South Florida. They are named for former National Hurricane Center forecaster Paul Hebert, who observed in the late 70s that most strong hurricanes which had struck South Florida since 1900 had also passed through one of these two small 335-mile-by-335-mile square geographic regions.

Hebert Box #1 is defined as the area between 15-20 degrees North (15-20N) and 60-65 degrees West (60-65W). This box is for only August and September major hurricanes which have hit southeast Florida after passing through the box.

Hebert Box #2 is defined as the area between 15-20 degrees North (15-20N) and 80-85 degrees West (80-85W). This box is for only late September and October major hurricanes which have hit south Florida after forming in the western Caribbean Sea and passing through the box.

Hebert himself said that a Hurricane does not have to pass through these boxes to hit, but if they do "you better pay attention". The 1935 Labor day Hurricane that devastated the Florida Keys developed west of this box and Hurricane Andrew passed NE of this box, so there are exceptions to the rule.

The second Hebert box is located over the Cayman Islands between 15° and 20° north latitude and 80° to 85° west longitude.
And yes, you will still find insurance companies pricing depending on the Hebert hurricane box, however each company will set their own box latitudes and longitudes.

What are the boundaries of the "hurricane box?"
Insurance companies were known to offer lower rates for sailors who kept their vessels outside of the "hurricane box" during the hurricane season. What are the boundaries of that region, and do insurance companies still offer that discount?

• Great job on researching your response. I particularly valued the graphics that show historical hurricane paths in relation to the Hebert boxes.
Thank you!

The first Hebert box is located east of Puerto Rico over the US Virgin Islands, between 15° and 20° north latitude and 60° to 65° west longitude. The second Hebert box is located over the Cayman Islands between 15° and 20° north latitude and 80° to 85° west longitude.

The Hebert Box is what I believe you are referring to. This appears to be two boxes that when a hurricane passes through one or the other it almost always hits southern Florida. http://www.hurricanecity.com/hebertbox.htm
