Should Michael Phelps have refused to apologize for smoking pot?

Michael Phelps is in a precarious position. He's an Olympic swimmer, not a well-respected philosopher or researcher. If he did not apologize and promise never to do it again, he'd risk losing his endorsement deals, and he's not going to get a second chance in his lifetime for these opportunities. He did the right thing by apologizing, even if he doesn't believe what he did was wrong.
