Apparently Iron Chef Japan aired from 1993 to 1999 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Chef
Due to it's popularity on American TV, the Food network spun off the much less entertaining Iron Chef America, much like Spike tried to make an American version of MXC (Takeshi's Castle in Japan), but without the hilarious dubbing job, it just isn't the same.
