Shiatsu is finger pressure massage which originated from Japan. It is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine where illness is thought to be due to imbalances in the natural flow of energy or 'gi' (pronounced as "chee") through the body.
Those who perform this massage use finger and palm pressure to energetic pathways called meridians to improve the flow of "gi".
Shiatsu is said to calm an overactive sympathetic nervous system which will help increase circulation, relieves stiffness of muscles and alleviates stress.
Rolfing on the other hand is founded by Dr. Ida P. Rolf a form of bodywork that reorganizes the connective tissues, called fascia that permeate the entire body. Dr. Rolf recognized that the body is a system of seamless networks of tissues rather than a collection of separate parts. These connective tissues surrounds, support, encloses all muscles, bones, nerves and organs and Rolfing works on this complex system of connective tissue to release, realign and balance the whole body.
