You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$"Gov. David Paterson issued a statement commending the police department.
"Tonight, we owe an incredible debt of gratitude to the heroic actions of the New York City Police Department and to a single vigilant New Yorker who identified a suspicious vehicle near Times Square in New York City," he said.
"Luckily, no one is hurt, and now the full attention of city, state and federal law enforcement will be turned to bringing the guilty party to justice in this act of terrorism.""
Also, from New York Times,
"A federal official said that domestic security officials had been informed that the event did not appear to be a terrorist threat. "
so my thinking is let the police make its investigation; it's not in our power to determine what happened

Yeah, before this, I didn't expect a bomber to be so dumb! I thought this was a crafty dud, but it was just a dud by a lame terrorist.
There is an update: The authorities are looking for a white man in this 40s who was caught on camera. He is suspected to be connected with this car bomb, but there is no solid evidence on it yet.
The man raises suspicion because he was caught changing his clothes and putting it in a bag.

Perhaps not; what you say, @vichussmith , assumes there is an entire plan
A different idea was proposed today on CNN by Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Middle Eastern politics at the London School of Economics
He sustains that Al Qaeda does not longer exist; what we have in the last acts since the Underbomber are distraught people who go into Yemen or Pakistani and train themselves from their own initiative.
That doesn't sound like an organized plan.
Smart observation.
