Was SNL ever as good as it used to be?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A lot of people are going to say no way, but since I wasn't around during the old SNL days of Bellucci, I personally have nothing to compare it to and have no problem with it. So I like it. I think they've really helped female comedians lately like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig. Comedy is so incredibly subjective that it's hard to please everyone. If you don't like it, don't watch it. There are other sources for comedy out there like MadTV, Comedy Central, YouTube, etc.

Good question. I wonder if people don't consider it "good" until the "good" stuff is old. Perhaps they miss certain classes of people, but don't realize it until the current shows produce different content. Perhaps maybe years from now, the content we see today will be considered funny and acceptable. I know what you mean though when people have always said SNL used to be better. I think it's just a perspective thing, audiences of all ages are watching and comedy is evolving in the YouTube age.

I think you make good points. But part of the point of the question is that people have always said SNL used to be better. Why is that? Is it a show that just seems to leave great memories even if the current show seems uneven?

Well, you'll get answers from SNL is/was great to SNL was never/is not great.

I like my humor simple and stupid (not like "smart" comedies like Fraisier). Justin Timberlake sneaking himself onto the SNL sets makes me want him as a guest member or even a permanent member when he's done with singing. Andy Sandberg is bringnig the show to all new wackiness like Punching people in the face right before they eat to his music videos.

I've found that any given episode of SNL is terrible. They take a shotgun approach. If you take any era (except maybe for the early 80's) and cherry pick the sketches, you get some mighty funny stuff, but there's always a lot of chaff.

This question implies that SNL was ever good. Looking back through the vast volume of sketches they have done over the years 99.99% of them were stupid, pointless, drivel. The tiny fraction of them that were good, became recurring themes on the show that were then beat to death until they too were stupid, pointless, drivel. When your yard stick is only 0.01 inches long it is hard to measure a football field.

Yes it was a good as they say if I understand your question right. You can tell how good an era of SNL was by the number of stars it created. I would say the early 90's era was the best as it produced: Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin Nealon... I could go on but I think that's enough.

I don't think so. Who can get the classics- Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Mr. Bill. They have some good stuff on these days, but SNL of today is nothing like the SNL of yesterday.

I am assuming that you are asking if SNL will ever be as good as it used to be. For me (age 30), I doubt it. It is all a matter of perspective. My parents liked when Chevy Chase and those guys where on there. I liked Ferrell and Cheri O'teri and that class. I think that have a couple of funny people now but definitely not as funny as it was with Ferrell and that group.
