Was Severus Snape a hero or a self-serving villain?

J.K. Rowling presents a wonderful tension throughout the series in casting doubt over the honorable intentions of the character, Severus Snape. In the first book he is immediately presented as an antagonist against Harry. After building Snape up as a member of the Order of the Phoenix and turncoat against the evil Voldemort, Snape kills Dumbledore. Finally, in the last book, Snape’s memory, as revealed by the pensieve, shows that he faithfully acted according to Dumbledore’s wishes after all. But he did so only for the sake of his love for Harry’s mother! Was he an honorable hero serving the forces of light, or was he merely acting in his own self interest?

I'd say he was a hero. What mithrandir said about Snape's love for Lily simply isn't true.

mithrandir "...only switched sides because of his love for Lily, Harry's mother, a love he should never have felt in the first place, she was a married woman!"

I'm not sure where you get that he never should have felt it from. They were kids when they first met, Snape loved her for almost his entire life. They knew each other before Lily met James. If Snape had been a self-serving villain he would hardly have risked his life trying to bring down Voldemort. Snape didn't realize who the prophecy could refer to when he brought the part he had heard back to Voldemort. Immediately after that he became a spy for Dumbledore. He was definitely a hero.

He did fight for the good side but he was a despicable character. He was a death eater and committed many evil deeds. He was also the reason Lord Voldemort learnt about the prophecy and killed the Potters. The woman that he loved was killed because of him and it was because of the remorse that he switched sides.

Snape is not a hero, he purely acted on self-interest, serving whichever side best suited him at the time. As you said, he only switched sides because of his love for Lily, Harry's mother, a love he should never have felt in the first place, she was a married woman!

Snape has become more and more complex over the course of the books, and Rowling cleverly casted doubts about his true intentions, but in the end, he turns out to be just as bad as he was presented on day one, betraying his former master for a woman, and then reluctantly staying on the 'good' side, because his former master would never want him back, and try to kill him at the first possible occasion.

Snape is a truly evil character. Always was, always will be.

That Harry thinks otherwise, and heralds Snapes 'Heroism', is a mistake on his part.

Thanks for your answer. I have to say that I disagree that Snape had no right to love Lily since he had been in love with her since childhood. I would rather think that he was misguided and redeemed himself in end.
