Was David Hume the first philosopher to discuss the theory of Intelligent Design?

Was David Hume the first philosopher to specifically detail the argument from design (which I suppose we would now consider Intelligent Design)? Also, was Hume actually religious? Though I'm pretty sure he believed in God, much of his work was consistently skeptical.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Technically, you could trace origins of Intelligent Design all the way back to the ancient Greeks, as Plato discussed the concept (though obviously not yet called "Intelligent Design") in his writing called Timaeus.

A good summary of the modern debate and philosophy regarding Intelligent Design is found in the judgement from the Kitzmiller vs. Dover trial back in 2005. http://www.pamd.uscourts.gov/kitzmiller/kitzmiller_342.pdf
