Was Chris Matthews statement an insult or an insight?
For those that don't know the issue please read: Chris Matthew Forgot He Was Black. This is not a poll. Please answer this question after giving it some thought. I will tip the best answer as voted by my fellow Mahaloians!

I'm not sure that Matthews' statement should be considered either one.
I feel certain that he didn't intend the statement as an insult, although there were certainly people that were insulted by it. Taken in context with the rest or his remarks, it seems like it was actually intended as a compliment - although what it says about our culture that this comment is intended as a compliment is another matter entirely.
By the same token, I'm not sure that any comment that is made with so little thought could be considered an insight, as well. It might give us insight into our culture, the media, Matthews himself, but the comment isn't any great insight in and of itself.
IMHO, the comment is just another example of Matthews' habit of spouting off without really thinking about what he's saying.
