Was Auburn's choice of Gene Chizik as football coach a good decision?

It was a terrible, terrible misstep on Auburn's part. Tommy Tuberville was one of the top 5 coaches in the SEC and you are replacing him with someone who had a 5-19 record in the Big 12. In 2008, Chizik had a 2-10 overall record at Iowa State - and that was without playing Texas, Oklahoma OR Texas Tech! His two wins: South Dakota State and Kent State!

I think Chizik will have a very tough time recruiting against Georgia, Florida and Alabama - not necessarily in that order.

Not in my opinion. Granted, Iowa State plays in a large powerful conference and is at a disadvantage from the start, but I still don't believe he's a good coach. My belief is that coaches pay their dues at the smaller schools and if they're actually good, they'll win, regardless of what school they're at. If they have a system that works, that system will prove to work at any school, regardless of the talent level, if the players are behind the coach.

No, as you said, he was 5-19 at Iowa State losing his last 10 games, 10! What kind of record is this? What makes you think he will be able to do better in the stronger SEC. While he does have ties to Auburn as their former D coordinator and is a good defensive coach, his offense leaves a lot to be desired. He runs an offense similar to penn state, but with more formation changes. He seems to look for gimicks and little innovative things which often times turn out worse then he expected them too. In short, to succeed he will need to hire a very gifted offensive coordinator.

I think it was a horrible decision. I don't know why you would take someone with a poor track record as a head coach in a lesser conference, on a losing streak, and give him a coveted job.

While I may be confused, Charles Barkley's not: "I think race was the number one factor."

While I certainly don't think it's as cut and dry as Sir Charles makes it out to be, his experiences on the basketball search committee (and the team's results since) are not encouraging.
