Was Anakin Skywalker fathered by an immaculate conception of the dark side?

In The Phantom Menace, Shmi tells Qui Gon that there was not a father to Anakin Skywalker. Implying that it was a immaculate conception of the force. Qui Gon figures he was born out of the midichlorians. I have heard some people argue that Palpatine or Plagueis were responsible. Do you believe these theroies? Do you believe that Anakin Skywalker was an immaculate conception? If so, from which side do you believe, the jedi force or the dark side? Or do you think George Lucas wants this to remain a mystery?

I think George Lucas wants it to remain a mystery, but I do believe he was purposely conceived by one of the above - I am more likely to believe it is Plagueis than Palpatine. Palpatine said in the "Revenge of the Sith" that Plagueis had been experimenting with stuff like that. Maybe he didn't realize he had been successful. This is actually a question I have had for a long time and have not been able to ever find a real answer.

The story is quite specific that he was born of an immaculate conception. However, it is clear that there is no Jedi side vs Dark Side of the Force to choose between. It is the Force itself, which in so far as it seeks something seeks balance.
