Was Alexander the Great the most famous figure of antiquity?

That probably depends on what region any given ancient was from. Shang Yang, the Prime Minister of Qin, was probably more famous in the Qin State of China's history. The mayor of La Venta, an Olmec center, mostly likely never even heard of the guy.
However, due to the fact that Alex, at the time, ruled such a large area of Mesopotamia, it's quite likely that his fame spread quite a bit beyond his own borders. I looked but could not find an estimate of the population of The Macedonian Empire at its height. It would be interesting to compare that to the estimated global population at the time, and where the major population centers were. This might give us better insight as to how famous Alexander was likely to have been, globally.
I would readily say he was the most popular person in Mesopotamia.
