I actually don't think they are a great choice. The first Matrix was all kinds of brilliant, and I even like their early sort of indie stuff, but lately they seem to put great visuals and too-complex mythologies ahead of coherent storylines and compelling character development. The later Matrix movies are a few minutes of great action followed by boring dialogue that makes no sense, then a little action, then more boring, rinse/repeat. Basically, take all the things people criticized about Superman Returns (from the normally great director Brian Singer) and multiply by 10.

I think the director has to suit the superhero. Batman worked as a dark character because the character IS dark; he dresses as a creepy nocturnal creature, he is driven by horrendous childhood trauma, and even the comics have frequently portrayed him as having a darker personality than other superheroes. Making Superman overly contemplative or symbolic or philosophical or whatever else these directors would throw in just doesn't fit the Superman mythos. I love it when directors add their imprint to a franchise (Singer on X-Men was good, Burton and Nolan's Batmans were good, Iron Man was good). But it has to FIT at least a little with the Superman that is already in pop culture. I like these directors a lot, but I don't think them doing Superman sounds like that great an idea.

I think they would do a good job on which ever project they choose, a "Superman" movie or a “Plastic Man” movie
