Viral Video: Is this trick shot by Roger Federer real?

A new viral video is starting to sweep YouTube - it features tennis great Roger Federer (on behalf of Gillette) hitting what appears to be a Sigg water bottle off a crew member's head just by using his racket and a tennis ball ... twice in a row! Is this footage real or fake? Can you spot any evidence that this is a hoax? Do you think Federer could really pull this off in real life?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I can see no evidence that this trick shot is fake besides that it would be possible to fake and the extreme difficulty of the shot.. twice. When I first saw the below Tiger Woods commercial I thought the golf stunts within it were fake as well until I saw a real person do it in real life. I am sure if I was a avid tennis player I would be seeing others attempt to and likely recreate this trick shot at my local health club or tennis court.

I vote it's real.

There are three things that make me think this is definitely a fake (the second and fourth are dead giveaways to me):

1. The chit-chat – try to listen to the conversation Roger Federer is having with the guy before he takes the shot. It seems like the idea to hit this bottle off his head comes really out of nowhere. The best I can tell Federer is asking if he follows the sport and then goes straight to hitting a bottle off his head. I don’t think so.
2. The Second Shot – notice that the guy in the white t-shirt who throws him the ball for the second shot is grabbing the ball before Roger even mentions doing it again. How did he know?
3. The Walk Off – After nailing the second shot, Federer high-fives the guy and then completely walks off the set. Wait, if he was going to be leaving, why was he hanging around the food table talking it up with a random staffer?
4. Gillette’s response – The official Gillette response was, “All we’ll say at the moment is we’ll leave the ‘real or fake’ debate up to the viewers, but the evidence is there to see. Roger’s skill and ability is incredible (that’s why he’s a Gillette ambassador!) so of course it was filmed in one take during a shoot for Gillette Fusion’s partnership with the British Skin Foundation.” Tell me that if this wasn’t true that Gillette wouldn’t just have answered with a “yes”

I’m a huge Federer fan and the fact that he can pull off such creative shots in match play makes me think he might be able to do something like this, but this has all the feel of a “corporate-sponsored” viral video.

As a follow-up, Federer was interviewed after his match the other night at the US Open. They asked him about this video - the fact that he didn't say it was for real and the general way he reacted definitely make it clear that this was manipulated in some way. Here is a story regarding someone asking the same questions and getting a similarly coy answer - http://bit.ly/9ehr6t

i think if u r so keen to find this, better download this video from youtube directly using youtubedownloader http://download.cnet.com/YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10647340.html (just copy this address to download the youtube video downloader")and play it in media player slow it to hell..and it will be very easy to find it..(i use this technique to learn dance moves in videos)there is a chance this is fake because there is no need of them to use a white baground ..they can also perform this in public.. but they may have used white baground as it is a studio.. anyway best of luck.. use my idea!

Tennis players of Federer's skill (all two or three of them) can easily pull this stunt off all day long. To tell you the truth, I was disappointed after reading the build-up, as this doesn't seem particularly difficult. that's a pretty big bottle, and he isn't that far away.

You know these guys practice hitting the inside or outside of the lines all day, right?

It looks real--why not? No evidence of camera movement or frame editing, and the spontaneous reactions of onlookers seem genuine. It looks possible to me.
