I agree with the above poster regarding Pokemon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. It was a very good game at it's time, and Pokemon Stadium 2 was just as good. The new games, however, just don't cut it.
Best currently available game? Try Fire Red for it's closeness to the original Pokemon. 150 pokemon to catch, instead of well over 300 from the newer games. It's a little more authentic.

For the handhelds, I was a huge fan of the original Pokemon Red/Blue, but it's nearly impossible to find those anymore, or the Gameboys to play them on. In their stead, I'd suggest Fire Red/Leaf Green. I agree with the above poster regarding Pokemon Stadium for the Nintendo 64. Pokemon Platinum is the best because you can catch awesome Pokemon, New Evolvmente, Pokemon from the old Games. According to http://www.gamespot.com/ds/rpg/pokemonplatinum/index.html it is the best game.
Thats why the best Pokemon game is Pokemon Platinum.
