For where I'm currently at in the game, 2 weapons are my favorite:
1). The "Ripper," what has to be one of the most powerful melee weapons in the entire game (especially if you keep it repaired). For close encounters, it can be a juggernaut of 1-hit-killing power in VATS mode. Even not in VATS, running up to a Raider and just holding them at arms length while grinding away their health is good fun.

2). I've recently acquired the Missile Launcher. I was exploring near Arefu, was ambushed by about 5 raiders, went for my shotgun/grenades, and then realized "I own a missile launcher with about 7 missiles. What am I doing?" Move back about 20 feet, target the center of a cluster, and unleash in VATS on one enemy. Body parts will fly, most will die in the area, you'll rake in 100+ experience points in one hit. Also, it will completely destroy super mutants in one hit.

I also ended up using the shishkebab quite a bit, especially against robotic enemies against whom small arms were largely ineffective. It allowed me to do very large amounts of damage quickly, set my enemies on fire, and, if I circle-strafed correctly, avoid damage, but as a melee it was really only effective on single enemies.

The Terrible Shotgun was awesome until I screwed up and used it to repair a regular combat shotgun, somehow the game doesn't prioritize when picking weapons to repair. After that little incident I tried to not rely on any of the special weapons.
If you are not in a hurry, and you have enough space, the grenades can be quite pleasant, especially if you can pin a death claw before it even can tell where you are attacking it from.

What was your favorite weapon to use while playing Fallout 3?
We've answered what is the most power weapon, but I'm curious to know what your favorite gun to play with was? What did you find yourself using the most?
I played most of the end game using A3-21's Plasma Rifle. My most favorite by far was The Terrible Shotgun I picked up in Evergreen Mills. At its highest level, it does 80 damage. The spread is really wide, so you have to be in close to be effective.

• I had completely forgotten about the shear glee of using The Ripper. I think your comment about the missile launcher points out a fundamental problem I have while playing the game: I save too much ammo. If something is scarce, I just end up not using it.

Shishkebab, it slices, dices AND sets your opponent on fire, what more could you ask for in a melee weapon

Damn ol' Painless sounds nice, what kind of damage does it have? Currently my favs are lincoln repeater, terrible shotgun, and the railway rifle. I like the shishkabob too and i even gave one to charon and he owns everything with it. I am fighting something and all of a sudden it spotaneously combusts and i'm like WHAT?!? then i look over to see charon holdin the shishkabob and it makes sense haha

By the end I also ended up using the plasma rifle, in the beginning I used the rock-it launcher quite a bit because of ammo concerns, but overall I agree, the terrible shotgun was the best, it did high damage at close range, and ammo was plentiful.

Can't beat the combat shotgun, even early in the game. That is if you don't mind getting close enough. Lincoln's Repeater is good and it shoots without deflection, the only problem is finding the ammo (which btw, is still easier to find than the ammo for the stupid sniper rifle). The Terrible Shotgun was awesome until I screwed up and used it to repair a regular combat shotgun, somehow the game doesn't prioritize when picking weapons to repair. After that little incident I tried to not rely on any of the special weapons.
