What video game do you think will get the prestigious 2008 "Game of the Year" award?
There has been a lot of really great games this year, but out of all the video games released in 2008, what do you think will get the "Game of the Year" award?
I'm not entirely sure which game will get the award, but I am somewhat leaning towards either Gears of War 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4. Both of these games are extremely top notch and are easy contenders for the 2008 award.
There are also other big high profile games that deserve the award.. Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Fable 2, LittleBigPlanet, the list goes on. But obviously, there can be only one.
Which game will you pick as Game of the Year?

No one has yet mentioned Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I think the reason no one has mentioned it is no one has PS3, and it's exclusive to that system.
That game has more polish, flash, style and just general oomph than any other game this year for me. The depth of the combat/stealth system puts you in control of a James Bond-esque arsenal of insane gadgets. The graphics are insane. The replayability is also of note. TONS of unlockable content, lots of reasons to play the game again. Metal Gear has always been a series unto itself and MGS4 is best (and sadly last...) iteration of the series. All of these points I think are going to hit home with a lot of video game media sites.

Based on the sheer amount of conversation I've been hearing from the various game podcasts I listen to, I would recon that Far Cry 2 will be a serious contender. Specifically, the editors at Idle Thumbs haven't shut up about it for the past few months.
Personally, Far Cry 2 has been one of the most authentic gaming experiences I've had in the last few years. I would be pretty excited it if won game of the year.

I just watched the trailer for Far Cry 2 and it's looks amazing!
I am going to go out on a limb and say that Grand Theft Auto 4 is going to be the "Game of the Year". While I haven't played all of the games that are likely contenders this year, I think that the amount of "Hype" and "Buzz" surrounding the game, as well as the great reviews it received make it a leading candidate.
BTW, what organization gives out the "Game of the Year" award? Is there an organization like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for Video Games? Also, what are the other categories that are awarded?

Seems like GTA IV had the hype, but I think you have to consider Gears of War 2 as a strong contender as well. Grand Theft Auto is very sprawling and impressive at first but, like Fable 2 and some other recent titles, the deeper you dig into the game, the more repetitive the experience becomes. Gears of War 2 seems to hold up better after a few months of playing, which is really what a Game of the Year award is going to come down to in the end.
There is no official organization that gives "Game of the Year" awards. Typically it comes down to each enthusiast organization gives their own. I wouldn't be surprised, however, to find out if a site like Metacritic had a page the aggregated GOTY awards.
I guess it's the underdog, but I'd have to vote for Rock Band 2. It's continuing the tradition of the now mega-popular music games with another awesome track list and improved playability. Plus, it's good to know that so many people have secret fantasies of becoming rock stars and not just fantasies of stealing cars and shooting people.
