In my opinion, the best original Nintendo game is Mario Bros. Not Mario Bros. 2 or 3, but the original 1.
There are many great features: the game is straightforward, to the point, and just plain FUN to play. You get to play the part of either Mario or Luigi to save Princess Toadstool from various mushrooms, turtles, and Bowswer and his gang of thugs. There are progressively harder levels that culminate in the defeat of Bowser in the castle where the Princess is held captive...you get to beat the bad guy, save the Princess, and be the hero (at least in this game...).
Another big pro of this game that makes it my favorite original Nintendo game is that the cartridge contains a bonus game: Duck Hunt. You use the gun attachment (as opposed to the remote controller) to shoot ducks or clay disks. The game was designed to be played a few feet from the television, but the cheaters (you know that YOU did this, too) got as close as possible to the game console in order to improve aim and score.
If you ever have the opportunity to buy or borrow an original Nintendo game console, I highly recommend that you check out the Original Mario Bros.

I think this was a brilliant idea (that the Big N has now run into the ground). Collecting and being able to fight and trade with your friends? Brilliant!

But it's a nice blend of difficult and fun and there are plenty of places where it goes non-linear. You can reach Bowser's castle in comparatively few stages if you know what you're doing. A lot of times this gets a bit game-breaking (with a blue Yoshi you can pretty much go wherever you want) but it's the fun kind.
The music is classic. Period, enough said.
Not only that, but there's a pretty active romhacking community and these days I watch more than I play. But then, I'm pretty much as nerdy as they come.

Tough decision. I would go with Mario 3, Mega Man 2, or Tetris. I played those a lot growing up and they were a lot of fun. Here's a video of a top 10 NES games list.

Super Mario Bros. 3! It's a fun, yet still simple take on the original with some cool twists thrown in (like being able to fly) that makes it just enough of a challenge. I used to play this after school every single day. http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/super-mario-bros-3.jpg

My one was Super Mario Bros. I grew up playing it. Back then there was not so much violence in games. Playing it was something I looked forward to. It was my only game once and I cherished it. Mario, with his red hat, jumping above stuff... Though I could never afford video games in my childhood, my uncle was generous enough to send me some. I kind of feel sad when I see affluent kids throwing their video games out just after playing once.

I'd have to say Super Mario World. My parents used to travel a lot and those in-room entertainment things that were way too expensive in retrospect hooked me. They usually had SMW and it was always awesome, although in hotels I never made it past the Yellow Switch Palace or so. But it's a nice blend of difficult and fun and there are plenty of places where it goes non-linear. You can reach Bowser's castle in comparatively few stages if you know what you're doing. My favorite Nintendo game is by far Tetris. I absolutely Love that game! I don't even have an original Nintendo anymore, but I've considered getting one again, just so I can play Tetris. I do have a hand held Tetris game, and I also have it on my computer, but for some reason it's just not the same as the original...
