I'll get right down to it: I think Final Fantasy VII is the best Final Fantasy game. Even now, playing it on the PS1, I don't think the more recent titles (FF X and FF XII) have quite hit the same level. Here's a few reasons:
1. Story
The story in Final Fantasy VII is (compared to other Final Fantasy games) simple, and kind of a crowd-pleaser. Sephiroth is crazy, he goes around burning villages and killing people. For much of the game, the mission is simple: track down Sephiroth, and stop him. It has this primal revenge story drive that's just easy to get involved with. A lot of the other Final Fantasy games (for me...) are so floaty and complicated, it just wasn't as easy to get on board on a visceral level.
2. Combat/magic system:
So well crafted and balanced it's not even funny. Seriously. The active battle system keeps you on your tows. If you're not fast with the menus/making decisions, you're getting attacked. The way the spells mature over time is also great. It's also cool how when when you max a spell out, it gives birth to another of its kind. The "limit break" system was also simple, and pretty kick-a@#. Other battle mechanics of the same kind make it too complicated.
3. Graphics:
The art direction and general aesthetics of the game are still great in 2009. Battle sequences play out in a nicely cinematic style and the summon spells still look great.

5. Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy VIII seems to get a lot of hate for some reason and I'm not sure why. It's not my favorite or it wouldn't be number 5 but it's not the worse, not anywhere close to Final Fantasy IX. Final Fantasy VIII has some pretty cool characters in it like Squall, Seifer and Irvine and the story is very enjoyable. The Final Fantasy series takes pride in itself that it has a lot of fun side quests and this game has the best one of all, a card game called Tetra Master.
4. Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X reminds me of one of my favorite television shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Simply because their main characters are horrible, but the supporting cast is awesome. Tidus might be the most clueless moron ever in a video game. But how can you not like a game with joyful Wakka, not so joyful Lulu, the silent warrior Kimahri and Auron, possibly the baddest character ever in a video game. Like Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X also has a really awesome side game called Blitzball. Blitzball is like an entire sports game inside of an rpg. I could play Final Fantasy X for hours and only play Blitzball the whole time.
3. Final Fantasy VII
There is a lot to like about Final Fantasy VII. First it has sentimental value because it was the first RPG I played on Playstation and the graphics were amazing at the time. FF VII also featured a hero with a huge sword, Sephiroth, the coolest villain ever, and Tifa. Finally! A female RPG character that isn't just a magic user! A girl that can actually kick some butt! Honestly Final Fantasy VII wasn't my favorite story out of the FF games but it had great effects and music, it was the first video game that was more like a blockbuster movie. Plus the Advent Children movie made me love FF VII even more.
2. Final Fantasy III
For a very long, long time Final Fantasy III wasn't just my favorite FF game but was my favorite game of all time. FF III had more characters than you'll normally have in a RPG and all of them got considerable amount of time to learn about the characters. The story was probably better than all the stories from FF VII to FF X. Even though the graphics weren't as good as the Playstation days I remember some of the scenes being my favorites of all time like Edgar escaping the Empire and Celes singing in the opera. Villains like Ultros and Kefka were also very entertaining and Gogo mimic's ability was one of the best ideas they ever put in a fighting system.
1. Final Fantasy XII
It's simple really. Final Fantasy XII has the best story, the best graphics and the best fighting system. I was even skeptical about the fighting system when I first heard about it but I ended up loving it. I like that the story is about politics and the cities are these well developed cities. I'm tired of RPG games where every city is made up of dirt roads and little village huts. Things like that make Final Fantasy XII seem more real, even though there are still scary monsters.
