This question will probably get a lot of answers from fanboys of both consoles.
But let me answer you from the perspective of someone who owns both consoles, and also used to be a PC gamer.
Lets get rid of the PC first as an option for you. Yes the PC has good graphics, yes you can upgrade the parts whenever you want to get the best experience. But that's just the problem with the PC, no matter how much you spend on it, after a few months or so, you no longer have the best experience. A new upgrade will come along that will just make your top of the line uber expensive pc setup 'looking' obselete.
A console experience is consistent, and you'll never feel like your friends have the upper hand because of better hardware. Plus the best games are release for the consoles. Also imagine playing on a 55" LCD tv, best game experience in the world.
Now for the PS3 or Xbox 360 debate. Choosing a console is like choosing a cellphone. The basic and most important features are really available on any cellphone you get, just like a console. Even the price isn't a factor anymore as PS3 has dropped its price.
The deciding factor is really which added features or advantages are more important for you.
On the hardware, the PS3 has wifi and Blu-ray, but if you're not really into Blu-ray movies (they are still quite expensive right now) or you already have a blu-ray player this isn't much of a factor. Wifi is convenient, but not a deal breaker for Xbox360, because you can still buy a Wifi peripheral for Xbox360. The PS3 has a larger hard drive, but unlike what the previous post will tell you both consoles support external hard drives and flash drives, and you can put pictures and videos in both.
For the problems reported regarding the Xbox360 hardware 'red ring of death', I believe its been relatively fixed for all Xbox360 bought since last year. So don't let it scare you.
My quirk for the PS3 hardware is the non-battery replaceable wireless controllers which also feel so light, it feels a little too fragile. The Xbox360 controllers are more ergonomic, and its batteries are replaceable. My quirk for the Xbox360 hardware is the Power brick, its so big and heavy and pales in comparison with the new PS3 which has no Power brick but it's still slimmer.
For the software, PS3 has made huge improvements to their software and UI experience, but it still pales in comparison with the Xbox360's UI and software experience. It feels more stable and well thought-out.
Xbox Live is well integrated to the games and doesn't feel like 'tacked-on'. Yet Xbox Live Gold (premium membership) is paid, but if you are not into live network gaming, this isn't a factor. You'll still be able to experience other Live features like downloading and buying games and content, (just buy Microsoft Points). PS Network is growing but i found the experience of browsing its content difficult and slow (even in the new version 3.0 update).
For the game library, this is a matter of taste. I can tell you right now that most, if not all, triple A titles that are released by third-party companies are available in both consoles. Its those rare gems that you will have to consider, MGS4 or Halo 3. God of War III or Splinter Cell Conviction. Used to be exclusives like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy ain't exclusive anymore.
The last factor to consider is the future. Next year both consoles will release motion controllers, right now 'Project Natal' - Microsoft's motion controller is looking sweeter and more intriguing, a motion controller without a controller.
So What is better .. Playstation 3 or XBox 360 ? Think about what I wrote, and let those factors help you consider what is more important to you, then you'll have your answer.
Don't let the fanboys sway you. A console is really a personal choice, and won't be the same for every person.

1. Great console exclusive games (Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 4, inFamous, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet)
2. Free online network with plenty to download
3. Ability to upgrade the Hard Drive on the cheap (added a 500GB hard drive to replace the existing 60GB HD for only $150)
4. It is a Blu-ray Player, and a complete media center on its own.
5. 3rd party software like Playon (Media Server software) is allowed... i.e. I can get Netflix, Hulu, etc. on my PS3 despite the Netflix-Xbox exclusivity
6. My fiance is a photographer and she always stores her photos on the PS3, and there is a great free bit of software for organization and showing of the photos
7. Wi-Fi built in
8. Playstation controller design is the best (in my opinion)
9. External Hard Drives can be attached via the USB ports and files can be transferred, backed up, etc. with little difficulty
10. Price Drop imminent with rumored release of PS3 slim
11. Very reliable, less than 1% are faulty as opposed to 1 in 3 being bad for Xbox360 (For a story, my PS3 finally overheated because I was using Folding@home too much at University, I sent it in to Sony when it was out of warranty and they still replaced my system completely free!!! No $150 repair fee even when it was out of warranty!!!)
I was a PS fan boy from the beginning when these consoles were released. To be honest I am looking to buy an Xbox 360 now but only because the price is where I would consider it worthwhile and enough good games have finally been released like Halo 3, Gears of War 1 and 2, and Fable 2.... Other than that I will not stop being pleased and satisfied with my PS3

Yet I find the $50 per year for Xbox Live to be well worth it considering how much better it is compared to any other online gaming service has (Wii & PS3). PS3 only has around 100 games you can download while Xbox 360 has over 1,000 you can download straight to your hard drive such as classics like Sonic and Knuckles, Ninja Turtles in Time, Earthworm Jim, Fable and are now starting to sell 360 games straight for download at a discounted price. They also are always having events going on at Xbox Live such as 1vs100 where you are actually in a gameshow competing against others online for cash and prizes. Another event they offer all the time is GAME WITH FAME where you get to play games online with celebrities and bands such as 3Oh!3, Avenged Sevenfold (Have played Halo 3 with twice), Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Jack Black, Dane Cook, Megan Fox, etc.
Its really whats more important to you. I owned a PS3 and found the majority of their games to be incredibly lame outside of MGS4 but the PS3 is better for cash value considering wi-fi is free and buying a Blu-Ray separately can cost $600+ while PS3 has it included but Xbox 360 seems to have a lot more entertainment and videogames.
Besides that Xbox 360 has Halo 3! What else could you need?

XBOX 360.
A reviewer Hardcoreware.net says
--------------------------------
Price: This is obvious; the XBOX 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you dont need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think its fair to compare both core systems.
Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, its quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPUs the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPUs on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPUs and do things the XBOX 360 cant, but I dont think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we'll have to wait and see how these games turn out).
Graphics: The XBOX 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I cant get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the XBOX 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.
Game Selection: The XBOX 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the XBOX 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPUs vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will add ps3 support as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the XBOX 360s due to manpower and more importantly, demand. Its this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back
Live: Microsofts online support with XBOX1 was phenomenal. They built in-house experience, user base, facilities, $$ commitment from executive level (since it proved successful), and most importantly, feedback from 100,000s of XBOX Live subscribers. Playstation 2s online support sucked. They are now playing catch-up, trying to emulate Xboxs model. But they had their hands tied just trying to make the PS3 work, it was incredibly ambitious (blu-ray etc.). I havent seen it yet, but I seriously doubt the quality will be anywhere to the level of XBOX 360.
HD Content: The PS3 comes with one built in (blu-ray). The XBOX 360 offers HD-DVD as an add-on for $200. You probably dont care about HD-DVD right now. But you will soon (The quality between DVD and HD is comparable to VHS vs DVD, if you have the right TV
) so I suggest paying attention to the war thats begun. There are two formats: HD-DVD and BLU-RAY. Basically if you rent a BLU-RAY DVD from Bockbuster, it wont play in your XBOX 360 HD-DVD, and vice versa with the PS3. The implications of this format war would require another article on its own. But as far as the consoles are concerned, the XBOX 360 wins because the DVD player is a separate unit. Playing movies is very taxing on the DVD reader, and lets face it. In 3 years when your PS3 DVD drive goes out due to playing lots of movies (PS2 was notoriously bad about this) you will have to go buy another PS3. With the 360, youll just chuck your HD-DVD player, and go buy another one at the store. In 3 years standalone units wlil probably only cost about $99-150. Another point for the XBOX 360, is that I dont know who will win the format-war, so I would rather wait with purchase of a HD player. The PS3 doesnt give you this option.

While XBL was better when PS3 was first released the PSN has caught up and in some respects surpassed XBL, and without the price tag (sure youre paying a little extra for the console, but think about how much you have spent on XBL?)
Both consoles have similar games, and both have some exclusives, but IMO the PS3 is more fun to play, (i should probably at least dust my xbox360).
Also bluray on the ps3 adds value to the console over all, and with it built in browser, the ability to stream video from sites like youtube, and BBC iplayer here in the UK. The PS3 also allows you to connect to networked media servers to stream video across your home network, making it the perfect media addition to the living room
Another fabulous feature of the PS3 is vidzone, a music video "channel" which you can access for FREE and watch music videos and make playlists of your favourite videos, they also post their own playlists each week, such as Artist of the week, The Vidzone Chart(top 10) and many more.
With the new PS3 Slim released at a cheaper price, with more features than ever, you can't go wrong buying the PS3.

Unlike these other answers I am definitely going to have to say Xbox 360. Yes, PS3 comes with Blu-Ray and overral can produce slightly better graphics as oppose to the 360 and even includes free wi-fi gaming as oppose to the Xbox 360. I loved the line that said "the XBOX 360 offers HD-DVD as an add-on for $200. You probably don't care about HD-DVD right now. But you will soon "
Which is fantastic, as the whole world has decided that it doesn't care about HD-DVD... But it does show that the world has moved on (a bit) since the review was written). The price information in it has also changed dramatically.

Personally I prefer Play Station 3 beacuse I own the other play staying systems and really enjoyed the games. The graphics are really good and so far I have come across more games for Play Station 3 rather than Xbox. I guess it is all really a matter of personal choice but you could always look it up and find the stats.
