the secondary character cannot be use. How do I to level up them? (infinite undiscovery)

Got this form Gamespot forums, seems pretty easy.

"You level them up while you're in cities. You just walk up to them and connect to them and then sit down and open up the menu and the rest is elementary from there."

Seems you can't use them directly since they are only for support.
