Yeah if you break a lock, it's done for good. You'll have to reload an earlier save or find another way to open the door (like a terminal)

In the future I'd recommend never using the force lock option unless its at 100% certainty to succeed. The only locks that will have an acceptable chance to be forced open will be easy to pick anyway so it's better to just pick the lock and leave nothing to chance.

If you're having trouble lock picking, try the following tips from the Fallout 3 Walkthrough:

"1. The trick is to start out with the bobby pin in three locations. First put the pin in the 10 o' clock position. Slowly move the screwdriver to the left and stop as soon as you feel resistance.
2. If you were able to get decently far with the screwdriver, you know that the sweet spot is on the left side and just have to fine tune the bobby pin until its in the right spot.
3. If the screwdriver was barely able to move at all, then put the bobby pin over to the 2 o' clock position and try to move the screwdriver.
4. If you got farther with the screwdriver, you know that the sweet spot is somewhere on the right side and just need to fine tune the position of the bobby pin.
5. If you have nearly the same amount of resistance from both the left and the right side, then put the pin in the 12 o' clock position and fine tune it from there.
6. If you feel like you're not close to finding the sweet spot and your bobby pin is about to break, back out and try again. Bobby pins aren't exactly rare, but they're one of those things that you can never find them when you need them."

Have you tried picking the lock? It's really bizarre that they let you break locks and not have them open in fallout 3. Try using a pick instead of the key, otherwise you may want to reload on the point before you broke it...if thats an option.

I tried picking the lock. When that didn't work, I forced it that led to the lock to break. Now, everytime I go up to it, it tells me that it requires a key to open. I may have to go back and find the previous save before that lock broke. Thanks!

I think you right jerillis, other message boards I found that's what the users had to do to correct this bug. That's the problem when they pump out these videogames with little testing, they end up having more bugs discovered through the consumer.

Well Good luck!

Once a lock is broken, it's broken. You can't get in. I always save before picking or forcing any lock. That way, even if I use up more picks than I'm comfortable with, I just reload. But I'm playing on the PC, so it's much more convenient to quick save and quick load.

Yeppers, once it's broken, it's gone. I unfortunately learned that on my very first quest. Kind of heartbreaking, but still adds some realism. I mean, if you break a lock in real life you can't exactly try again!
