Spore is not likely to gain the popularity that the Sims holds. One reason people seem to enjoy the sims so much is the human element. Its easier to feel connected to your characters when they are human, its easier to relate to them and you care about them more than you would and alien. A lot of gamers enjoy the "fantasy life" that games bring them, and a fantasy which is realistic such as the one that the sims provides, can be a comfortable place to live to exercise your desires without consequence.

Plus, there's an endgame to Spore, whereas in The Sims, you can continue to play and play and play with no end in sight(and play it differently every time you start it up).
When I played The Sims when it first came out, I would build a house/family, and then sometimes I would just leave the computer for a few hours and allow them to do whatever they wanted and what not. Then I would come back to see if anything happened(usually they were okay).
Yeah, I'm not entirely sure if Spore will create as big of a following, but I can tell you though that Spore is pretty innovative and it is pretty fun(to a point).

I played Spore for several hours over about a week. It has very little replay value. The idea was very innovative, but once you get through the game, you won't even want to play it again. This is largely due to the last stage (the "space level") being very tedious and annoying.
The marketing strategy was brilliant... the game itself was mediocre.
It's still worth playing.... just don't expect it to hold your attention anywhere near the degree the Sims or the Sims 2 might. Anyway, the Sims 3 is coming out soon (I have heard February), so at this point, I'd say if you get anything, you should get that.

I was pretty disappointed. I ended up starting over multiple times to play the 'Sims-like' stage (A.K.A. the creature stage, which is what most of the hype of the game focuses on, even though it's a small part of the actual game) over & over until I got sick of it. The game's fun waned after a week.

Spore is like five games in one. One, you start out as a simple celled organism, and as you gain DNA you can "evolve" or design your creature. The more you play, the better parts you get. Eventually you earn enough DNA to get legs, thus enabling your creature to go on land. Two, you play a prehistoric creature surviving against other creatures with whom you can choose to allay or hunt. Third, your creature evolves into a sentient being and begins the tribal phase. Basically this is like Age of Empires game where you are against other tribes you can once again ally with them or destroy them. Once conquering your surrounding are, you enter the civilization phase which is like Risk. You conquer territories and try for global domination through a combination of religious conversion, trade, and force. Finally, your civilization launches into space giving you a whole universe to explore. This part of the game has the longest amount of playing time because there is so much to explore and many options and missions.

-In order to get the most out of the game, you do need to enjoy (and perhaps even be good at) creating objects from scratch. If you love making wacky creatures and have an artistic eye, you will love it and the game will reward you. If not, you won't get as much out of the game as you could.
-Secondly, the game is definitely a "game," and not a "toy," which is what I would say about the Sims. It's a toy, not a game. Because of this, Spore is aimed more at actual gamers, and then further aimed at creative/artistic gamers.
-However, it's also kind of not that great of a "game." The mechanics are fairly rudimentary, and for strategy enthusiasts, there's other genres that do what Spore does better.
This isn't to say it's not a great/fun product. It definitely is, and personally I like it more than the Sims, but I doubt it will have that kind of sweeping appeal.

Also, the game doesn't let you create much of a narrative around the characters in the game. They're far more abstract than The Sims, so I get the impression (and from commentary I've heard in podcasts), you can't make the kinds of machinama and stories about people like you can in The Sims.
What happened for me was I quickly realised the repetition of the creature stage, so didn't find I wanted to come back to that part regularly. And the game after, the tribal stage, was very much a "real-time-strategy lite" type of game. I don't like RTS at all. I stopped playing there. ..If I can coax myself to get past that, maybe I'll reach the end-game. But I've reached an impass. I like the early stages, and might try them on occasion. But IMHO it feels like there's much less replayability than The Sims.
Your mileage may vary, of course. I expect you'll be totally addicted to it for the first weekend or two. After that, it's fun to play with, sure. But it's very abstract. Its narrative is much more limited than The Sims.

Spore doesn't feel like a single game experience, but is split up into five different smaller games that all share good cell/creature/building/vehicle customization tools. The Sims was a new kind of game, but Spore is more like a smooth reskin of other games (with the exception of possibly the creature and space stages, which are more original and fun). I would still recommend Spore, but I don't think it really keeps people playing like The Sims did.

with spore you steadily progress from a cell to an intergalatic empire. once you get to the space age, the game gets super repeatitive and as you slowly try to creep your way toward the center you hit road block after rock block, from problems with your planets to alien invasions. there is an end to the game, but that's if you don't give up.
with the sims, you are practically living another life. you get more involved with your sim than you can ever get with some alien creature you've just made up. another thing was that i was actually able to close my eyes for a bit while playing spore with nothing happening. with the sims......one blink and a sigh and an hour goes by and your guy is near starving to death, you being the only life support keeping your helpless guy from instant death.
as for how addicting each is, for spore most will get annoyed and quit because of how much things repeat in the space age, but getting up there from a cell is pretty fun. as for sims.......i'm just worried i'll get addicted again if i start playing.

.........Spore is a bit more less objectives, it will be more free-roam than Sims is. Sims requires more tactical thinking, and can get very hard and irritating when low on money and you Sim just waves at you in anger.
I'd go for Spore personally, as you also evolve your own creature, which is pretty cool

Is SPORE the new SIMS?
I have yet to play SPORE, but was one of the first to pick up (and become addicted to) SIMS when it came out. I'm a little afraid to play SPORE for fear that it will be as addicting. I played SIMS for 12 hours straight that first day!! Any thoughts?

Well, I don't really know if Spore will become the new Sims(very much doubt it), but it's still early to tell as the game isn't that old yet. Plus, there's an endgame to Spore, whereas in The Sims, you can continue to play and play and play with no end in sight(and play it differently every time you start it up).

Spore is amazing. The creature creator engine allows you to built virtually anything. You should see some of the YouTube videos of homemade Alien Queen, Predator, AT-STs made with their simple user interface. Spore is actually 5-games in one with their storyline. Once you advance to the next chapter, it feels like a completely different game. Who knew you were going to be in a space RTS sim at the end? Much better than Sims, no picking up trash every five minutes!

I'm a huge fan of The Sims and Spore is hardly like it at all. You don't get to control your creatures like you do in The Sims, except in one stage of the game. There are five stages total. Every stage is like a new game, and as you level up, the game becomes less like The Sims. I was pretty disappointed. I ended up starting over multiple times to play the 'Sims-like' stage (A.K.A. the creature stage, which is what most of the hype of the game focuses on, even though it's a small part of the actual game) over & over until I got sick of it. Sims were much more popular and were a casual game that many people could enjoy. Spore hasn't reached the level that Sims did. It will take a while before Spore can become Sims if it ever will. I generally do not like Spore, but I liked playing the Sims games when I was younger, though this is a personal preference.

The Sims 3 is scheduled to be released in February. So, no, Spore is not the new Sims. I find myself playing Spore as often as I played The Sims. Spore has replaced The Sims as my "addicting" video game. Spore is like five games in one. One, you start out as a simple celled organism, and as you gain DNA you can "evolve" or design your creature. The more you play, the better parts you get. Unfortunately, Spore is nothing like the Sims. Spore is more of all about creating everything in the world around you and seeing other player's creations as well. There is not really much control over your creation except in the space stage and creature stage. I can say though Spore is very fun for a bit but the novelty wears off pretty fast. I couldn't put it down for about a week but after that it just lost its charm. I would recommend Spore of you are really creative as that is who this game is really for. Entertain yourself with it for a bit and wait for Sims 3 to come out but it'll be a while for that one still.

People should remember that the Sims have been around for a VERY long time... And Spore is actually a far superior game as far as technological advancement is concerned. Give it time and I'm sure we'll see a large Spore following. The two games are different styles of game play, as well, so that adds an additional difficulty in comparison of the two games. Halo has a huge following; however, that following isn't affected by the popularity of the COD series. That would be a closer comparison in my mind.

Spore is not the "new Sims," which would mean "game that everyone including housewives/girlfriends and your uncle Bob plays because it just has that kind of mainstream appeals-to-everybody vibe." Spore does not have that to me. It's actually a pretty niche title in some ways: -In order to get the most out of the game, you do need to enjoy (and perhaps even be good at) creating objects from scratch. If you love making wacky creatures and have an artistic eye, you will love it and the game will reward you. If not, you won't get as much out of the game as you could.

no spore is not the new sims it is accualy a creature creator game. You create your own creature and it then grows bigger when you feed it but you have to watch out for the bigger things then your are they will eat you. You can also make your own creature like making its head, tail, nose, mouth and anything bigger change the color and stuff. its not all that great. it gets boring after ten miniutes.

Spore is nothing like Sims. Sims is addicting and you get to live and control the lives of your characters, potentially taking you a lot of time to. Spore is a simplistic genre best suited for kids; you do 3 to 4 activities continuously until you advance to the next level (around 20min per level), until you reach the space level (i reached it in 4-5 hours) where it becomes extremely boring with endless amounts of traveling and running away from enemies. Result: Spore is nothing like Sims. Don't buy Spore.

Spore might be quite addictive initially (I played it much of the weekend when I first got it.) But, unlike The Sims, it is a series of distinct game-types linked together, and (kind of) has an end to the game. If you find one of the game-types particularly unappealing it can quickly stop you from exploring the game entirely. Also, the game doesn't let you create much of a narrative around the characters in the game. They're far more abstract than The Sims, so I get the impression (and from commentary I've heard in podcasts), you can't make the kinds of machinama and stories about people like you can in The Sims.

Spore is not as addicting as Sims, but may be in the beginning. Sims allows more of a range of activites unlike Spore. If you enjoy making and designing your own creatures, buildings, vehicles, etc than I recommend Spore. If you enjoy reality and more free and open ideas then stick with Sims. Hope that helped!

No I doubt it. While it is a giant leap in terms of gameplay, its focus on "cuteness" and the casual gaming market has driven off many gamers who make mods. This combined with the MASSIVE DRM (a copyright system) botch up by EA and lack of replay value means that Will Wright's latest creation will be remembered, for all the wrong reasons

I don't think so. I think what Maxis was trying to to with Spore was to create a large scale simulator of many things that do occur in our universe. On top of that, Will wright also describes spore as an educational tool. On the other hand, the Sims is a game where the focus is to micro-manage a household, thus the scale is much smaller (a neighborhood as compared to a universe). All in all the Sims and Spore are two totally different things and will both continue to have their respective sequels, and with Sims 3 in the works and various spore creature part packs also in the making, both series will not disappear anytime soon.
