You may have to go back to Rivet City and stock up on weapons/armor/ammo. At this point in the game, you should be able to handle a couple mutie's. But if you have followed the main quest exclusively then you may have problems. You should have completed at least 5-6 side quests by now. Those, Power of Atom, Oasis, Cantebury Commons, part of the Wasteland survival guide. These side quests give major perks which will help you in the rest of the game. Also, make sure your armor & weapons are in the best repair possible, you will be amazed at how much more lethal a 60% weapon is over a 40%. Flack & Shrapnal's is a good place to have your stuff repaired and buy more firepower. And be sure to use VATS. Also, don't forget about Chems. Med-x increases your damage resistance, and Pycho increases the damage you inflict on your enemy. They can be used in tandum. Also, Buffout will increase your strength and endurance.
