It's impossible. Like most Sonic games, once you finish the game it's not actually finished, it reverts to right before you killed the last boss. I hope that I got your meaning of "restoring" the continent right, I've never actually played the game but I think that's your answer from stuff I looked up. I've included some of them so you can double check too.
