First, you should explore the ship so that you're familiar with its layout. There's a room with a large circular platform and a holographic map hanging over it. Somewhere around this platform is the button prompt to look at the Galaxy Map.

Use the Galaxy Map to select your destination. The map can be confusing at first because there are many layers to it. It's easy to get forget where exactly you are. You start out looking at galaxies, then zoom in to look at nebulas or clusters, then systems and finally individual planets.
