Both of the first two answers are excellent, but to give you a little more detail -
This is the order of the games that have been released and to be released:
Halo (FPS)
Halo 2 (FPS)
Halo 3 (FPS)
Halo Wars (RTS)
Halo: ODST (FPS) ODST - stand for Oribital Drop Shock Trooper (comes out this September)
Halo: Reach (release date and game type to be determined)

Now what no one else mentioned, is in the first 3 you play as Master Chief - a genetically enhanced trooper.

Halo Wars you are commanding armies against enemy armies. And as previously stated it gives a timeline of a series of events including the storyline of the game itself.

If you have an XBOX, I recommend going to the marketplace and downloading every video available. I will supply links if you don't.

Other reasons why Halo became so popular -
Halo 2 was, if not the first - one of the best online stat tracking systems. You can go to the website, look up your profile, and see every medal you got for special kills along with maps giving details of who killed you where and vice versa. You can also look up your friends stats and just people in general by typing in their XBOX Live gamertag.

Halo 3 gave the ability to not only build maps to play on, but you can upload them to the site and download other peoples maps that they created. Along with a movie playback of recent games you played. You can change the camera view from player to player or detach the camera and move it around the map for different angles. From here you could record clips and upload them or take screenshots from the game and upload them.
For example here is my profile: http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Halo3/Default.aspx?player=bSin

Now what further fueled the whole movie idea were the initial rumors that Jackson was going to direct it. Refer to this article for the best rundown of what happened and what is going on now:

As of this summer (mentioned @comicon), I believe the only thing concrete is the Halo Legends cartoon that is coming out at some point.

Personally I believe it was because of this video which was originally separated into 3 parts. I found the video on youtube, its close to ten minutes

If that embed did not work, here is the link:

Here is the Trailer for Halo 3:

Here is a great article from WIRED before Halo 3 came out:

Here are a few videos for Halo: ODST

Here is the preview video for the new video game Halo: Reach

Hope that helps!

Halo is originally a game developed for XBox which quickly became a sort of a flagship game for that console similar to what Super Mario was for Nintendo.

If I may quote a press release:

--quote--
Microsoft Game Studios and Ensemble Studios announced that the much-anticipated strategy game Halo Wars will be landing at retailers worldwide this February in both a standard and Limited Collector's Edition format. Taking the Halo battle beyond the first person, Halo Wars puts you in command of the battlefield and combines the intensity of Halo with a riveting new story that precedes the events of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Developed by Ensemble Studios, the creators of the critically-acclaimed Age of Empires series, Halo Wars was designed specifically for Xbox 360® and brings a genre that has typically thrived on the PC seamlessly to consoles. From specialized controls to redesigned resource management and unit command, Halo Wars gives you the fluid strategy experience you've been waiting for on a console.

In addition to the standard retail version, Halo Wars will be offered in a Limited Collector's Edition through participating retailers and will feature:

Three New Halo 3 Multiplayer Maps: Be one of the first to experience the Mythic Map Pack from Bungie, which includes three new maps, Assembly, Orbital, and Sandbox.
Halo Wars: Genesis: This beautiful graphic novel by Phil Noto, Graeme Devine, and Eric Nylund chronicles the first military campaign against the Covenant. The novel centers around the Spirit of Fire on a mission to discover why the Covenant are so interested in the world of Harvest.
Unique In-Game Vehicle: Command the " Honor Guard" Wraith.
Six Leader Cards: Leaders possess elite skills which can turn the tides of battle.
Spirit of Fire Patch: Start the journey as an official Spirit of Fire crew member.
As an added bonus, fans eager for their chance to battle the Covenant will be able to pre-order Halo Wars and receive a pre-order card to download a special in-game Warthog vehicle with flame decals from select participating retailers.
--/quote--

Halo is a game developed by Bungie Studios and is an "Ego-Shooter" game, meaning you as a player fight in levels against other "bad" guys. There are also multiplayer functions but they are not the essence of Halo.

The series starts in the year 2552 in a time when planet Earth is over populated. Man kind had to leave Earth and populate other planets. Basically one of those colonies looses contact to the others and when the human race tries to find out whats going on an undefeatable alien ship kills all but one human space craft. You play a human in the future fighting aliens to get back the colony of "Harvest".

Simply put :)

Halo is a super popular game developed by Bungie and Microsoft.
It's one of the best first person shooters available for Xbox360 and PC.
Halo had some of the best graphics during the time of it's release.
One of the big differences between Halo and all the other First Person Shooters (FPS) is that with Halo you could only carry a couple of weapons with you, if you wanted to use a new weapon, you had to decide to drop one of the weapons that you are carrying already.
For Halo 2 Microsoft build an awesome publicity campaign, and in this way Halo 2 become one of the best sold video games in history

When Halo 2 was released for PC it was for "Windows Vista only" in an attempt for Microsoft to increase the sales of their failed OS.

The sales record was only broken for Halo 3, that was because the publicity in this case was even more big.
"The Museum of Humanity" is a very famous ad made for Halo 3

The Halo Mithology has spread across books, comic books, etc.

Neil Blomkamp of "District 9" fame was going to direct the movie for Halo, backed by Peter Jackson, but the project was canceled.
Now the rumors start again, could it be true this time?

halo is pretty much just shooting people and going on missions. it takes quite a bit of hand eye coordination if you are not a regular gamer.

halo basically is about the hero named master chief who is a spartan who is basically like a super soldier and he fights to stop a war against aliens called the covenant and on his side is the arbiter who is a outlawed from his race and branded by the mark of shame and then in halo 3 they meet and they battle a parasitic race called the flood that have spores that if you are dead they revive you and make you a zombie dedicated to serving the flood.
the name halo is taken from the fact that the game involves huge rings that can shoot energy blasts to obliterate anything that the flood come in contact with because if even 1 spore were to get to a planet it could have an army of flood and several billion other flood spores.
the halo rings were created by the forerunners which were an ancient alien race that seemingly died out millennia ago

that is the basic story without revealing too much

the game halo 3 has a mode called forge which allows players to create custom maps very easily.
it also has a mode called custom games in which you may play on the maps that you have created in forge with your own custom rules
it also has a mode called theatre in which you can watch yourself play the game and it captures videos from all games

hope this is what you are looking for.
