Okay, now that that's out of the way, I don't necessarily know that I'd pick GTA4 as the GOTY, but I do understand it. There's a lot of game there, and more importantly, there's a lot of fun to be had with it. There's so much to do and enjoy in Liberty City, I totally understand their logic. What I don't get, though, is how it could lose both best PS3 game and best 360 game, yet be best overall.
Gears 2 is a great game, and Left 4 Dead might be the most fun I've had on the 360 all year, but both of those are heavily social experiences. If I weren't co-opping them with good friends, I don't think I'd enjoy them nearly as much, L4D especially. GTA4 is a great experience no matter how you play it. Alone, with friends, on missions, or just free roaming.
I will say I totally agree with their choice for best handheld game. Professor Layton is the most fun game I've played in quite some time. If you haven't tried it and you like puzzles, you really need to give it a go. It's my personal game of the year, but it's a bit too niche for me to expect Spike to agree.

As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

GoW 2 was a very good game, no doubt, and the first one changed the way that FPSes played by making it advantageous to actually stop and take cover, rather than encouraging the running, jumping, circle-strafing strategies that predominated before. And though the sequel was bigger and better, it also did nothing really new, it's not a game changer, just an improvement on what was there.
I think I would have chosen left4dead (though it's late in the year release made this difficult), Valve really has done something new with it, the atmosphere is pitch perfect, and it is the best designed cooperative FPS ever made, bar none, by making it virtually impossible to just go it alone, they make you work as a team - something that other games had not figured out how to do yet.
Plus, it has zombies and shotguns, what more could you ask for?

Did you see the SpikeTV Video Game Awards last night? What did you think of their Game of the Year? (Spoilers)
Honestly, the game they chose to be "Game of the Year" was a good choice(don't want to name the GoTY, in case a bunch of people recorded the show and are watching it later), but honestly, I think a certain other game should have gotten the award. But they did hype up the game they chose possibly more than any other game this year, which ultimately gave them the edge I would imagine.
Which game do you think should have gotten Game of the Year?

The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game, though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year. As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

well personally i think gears of war 2 should have won. I really think your right about the reason they chose gta4. they made such a big deal of it, and yeah its a good game but its all the same really. the online gave it a new feel but i think gears of war 2 would have been a better choice.

Yeah, I honestly couldn't believe that they chose Boom Blox over SSBB for Wii Game of the Year. Sure, Boom Blox is fun, to a point, but it's not even in the same league as Brawl, not a chance. SSBB has its own following. There is still lots of gamers, even to this day, that still play Super Smash Bros. (Melee) and in tournaments no less.
Well, I guess they have their reasons for choosing Boom Blox, but I don't have to like it.

I definitely agree with GTA IV being named the game of the year. Not only were the graphics and gameplay absolutely amazing, but the storyline was similar to that of a movie. I found myself completely addicted and felt compelled to play more to find out the ultimate fate of Niko. I am currently playing it a second time and it is just as great as the first time around. GTA IV is one of the top five video games I have ever played and definitely deserves Game of the Year in my opinion.

I can't say I agree with their choice, I didn't particularly enjoy GTA4, but I know that I don't like sandbox games, more than that though, I don't feel that it brought anything new to the genre, it was a definite improvement over what came before, but an incremental one, not a revolution. It's no Bioshock. GoW 2 was a very good game, no doubt, and the first one changed the way that FPSes played by making it advantageous to actually stop and take cover, rather than encouraging the running, jumping, circle-strafing strategies that predominated before.
