I own both, and I feel you can't go wrong buying either. There are, however, some factors that may help you decide.
The price of the consoles are now very similar. Although the 360 starts at $199.00, this model doesn't have a hard drive. So assuming you want a hard drive, figure on the price being $299. If you don't mind a used unit, the 360 is cheaper, at least where I live. Your area may be different.
New release games are very similar for both consoles. Most titles release for both, with a few exclusives scattered in the mix. No matter which you buy, you will probably kick yourself once a year when you see an awesome game released for the other system. But this will be rare. Don't worry about it. The real tie-breaker between these systems when purchasing games is what you can find in the used racks. The 360 has a clear advantage here. I consistently find more used games, at lower prices, for the 360. So unless you have a burning need to play only the latest and greatest games the day they come out, you may be happier with the 360.
The PS3 hardware is more powerful (by the numbers) and better designed (the 360 is known for Red Ring of Death failures). Don't let the power tempt you too much, as both are awesome, and the difference isn't normally apparent in actual game play. The failure rate IS something to consider. My 360 has never had an issue in 2 years, but the RROD is legendary. That said, Microsoft does back up their product well and have extended warranties to 3 years on the problem units.
The online factor: PS3's online experience costs zero dollars. It is free. XBOX live costs about 50 bucks a year, although you can sometimes find a one-year pre-paid card on sale for 39.95. We aren't comparing apples to apples here, however. To me XBOX live is a superior online experience and worth the fee. The social aspect (friends, gaming etc.) is much more user friendly and functional on XBOX live, and XBOX live offers a respectable amount of free down-loadable content. But to be honest, I haven't had as much experience with online gaming on the PS3, so I may be a bit biased on this one.
Both are excellent media players, but the PS3 offers Blu-ray. In fact, the PS3 is considered by many to be one of the better Blu-ray players out there. Both offer plenty of HD down-loadable movies and TV shows for a price. And both support streaming of video from a Windows PC. Personally I like to store my video on an external USB hard drive and plug it into one of the systems to play. Both support this, although I'd give the 360 a slight edge on compatibility with various file formats. Oh yeah, BOTH now offer streaming of Netflix movies. Up until a few days ago, this was available only on the 360, but now the PS3 supports it as well.
My 360 has loud fans. My PS3 is almost silent. I hear that the newer 360s are not as loud. If you plan on using your console as a media device, take this into consideration. The fan noise never bothers me while playing games, but I notice it sometimes when watching movies.
Having owned both systems for a while, I find that I use the 360 for games and the PS3 almost exclusively for watching Blu-rays and other video. If you are buying the console purely for gaming, I'd recommend the 360 based on a wide selection of used games at lower prices and a better online experience. If you plan on the console also being a media center, the decision gets tougher. Both do media so well, but the Blu-ray and quiet fans of the PS3 really score some points...
Whichever you choose, enjoy!

Xbox 360 is a basic console for me. The good thing is that you can always find so many games for it. But nothing outstanding from this point of view, since now, all the latest games are also launched for PS3 too. It is a great console and it's cheaper than PS3. Another good point, it's that it can be modded. I will not go deeper in this "modding" subject....
Now, PS3 has more than that. It is like a computer used only for Games. First it has Bluray, superior processor, best graphics ever seen on a console system. PS3 is using a NVIDIA RSX graphic processor which is way better then ATI Xbox 360.
If you had ask me this question 4 months ago, I would say, go for Xbox360 ( due to the number of games) but now, have to say get a PS3.
This is my opinion for consoles:
- PS3 - quality and best equipment
- Xbox360 - biggest game collection ever
- WII - FUN FUN FUN!
- PSP - My favorite gadget and best friend! :D
If you have any questions about consoles, or what games, accessories you can use, feel free to contact me directly. I'm working with consoles every day!
Hope this helps!

"The Xbox 360 will ship with a 12X dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, no announcements for HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc integration has been inferred or announced. In addition it has three USB 2.0 ports, two memory unit slots (unspecified), and support for four wireless game controllers (unspecified whether Bluetooth or IEEE 802.11g). It supports progressive-scan DVD movies and nearly all DVD and CD formats with the notable exception of DVD-Audio and SACD.
For raw processing power, the specs seem to favor the Playstation 3. This was not helped by the fact that Xbox has not shown much footage of its upcoming games while Sony practically barraged E3 attendees with about 2 hours of demos, real-time game engine samples and technology showcases. The Xbox, however, has the added bonus of its Live network integration which will allow an amazing amount of online real-time collaboration - all of which can occur concurrently with game play or other use of the console. And make no mistake, Xbox Live is very impressive on the 360.
The new Xbox also includes a free Xbox Live Silver subscription, enabling users to experience some of the Live phenomenon without having to pay an additional monthly fee just to see what all the fuss is about. Microsoft's first to market approach and push for a central media center solution will be interesting to watch as consumers decide which direction to take in 2006. One thing is for sure, the face of gaming has taken yet another quantum leap and has been forever changed."

My first point of comparison is in the game library. Does either system have an exclusive title that you prefer? If so, that should carry a heavy weight in your decision.
Second, if you want to play online, what do your friends play online? You cannot play cross platform with online games. Nor can you see statistics for someone playing the same game with another system.
Third, what is your priority for online quality? I don't use the online features of my Wii very much at all, so it doesn't bother me that it has such a poor online interface. In my limited opinion, the 360 has a better online experience.
Fourth, what are you familiar with? Each system is a reasonable evolution of its predecessor. Controls, interfaces, and setups will be familiar to those who have owned previous-gen systems.
Fifth, (some might argue this the most important factor) what "extras" are you most interested in having? Currently, the PS3 is the only one to play Blu-Ray disks. The XBox has a superior trophy (in game reward) system. Other features not directly related to playing and completing a game may interest you greatly.
In the end, I currently only have a Wii, but I have played both systems at friends' houses. Here is how I stack my list of 5 weights:
1. PS3 - Most of the titles that are exclusive are on the PS3 (eg Little Big Planet)
2. N/A - While most of my friends are XBox Live fans, I do not play online much.
3. N/A - My "requirements" for online functionality are met equally well by both systems.
4. PS3 - I have owned the PSX and PS2, but I have not owned an XBox.
5. PS3 - While I find the 360's Achievement system very engaging, I have played games for years without it. However, I can make double use of a system that plays HD movies as well as games. In the past, my PS2 has functioned as my primary DVD player, so this seems to be a natural evolution.
So right now I am leaning toward a PS3 as my next system. While I can suggest you do the same, I strongly recommend you look at the 5 key points I laid out and see how they result for you.

I'll put it to you like this: I was a die hard PS fan for years until I met my wife and then I started playing Xbox.
Now I reccomend Xbox 360 to everyone who asks. I feel the controls are easier, the games and graphics are just as smooth and cool (and challenging), and Xbox spent their time making a gaming system vs. PS3 cramming a bunch of stuff in there that you may or may not want (but still pay for) like full internet access and blue ray player.
You're right in saying that both have similar features, however, if you want games, go 360. You do have to pay like $50.00 for a year of internet online play and you can't "surf the net" like you can on PS3, however as far as games go, there are MANY more than on PS3. Well, way more COOL games anyway (opinion).
Still, on the other hand if you want all the extras that the PS3 has (internet, blue ray, axis controllers etc). that may be what you'll want to get. Many people argue that you get more in a PS3, but you sacrafice the library of games that the Xbox has.

You could possibly argue that one was a 'bit' better than the other (or that one has a prettier case for that matter) but that would be missing the point. Both a very good systems and should give you what you want in console and you're unlikely to wake up at 3am and curse the fact that its graphics engine is powered by the wrong chipset.
The biggest factor isn't a technological one... its a social one. Playing a few games by yourself is fun... but playing lots with your friends is awesome.
What console do most of your friends have. Not only can you play against real people you know (which is more fun that beating strangers) they can also recommend games for you, and even lend you some disks to get you started.

1. It has greater processing/graphics capabilities, better reliability, and includes wireless connectivity without add-ons. It also has a Blu Ray player.
2. Sony has also been really good about adding functionality through firmware releases.
3. While I haven't had any issues with our XBox360, they are notorious for their failure rate.
Throw in the recent price cut, and it's a really sound choice.

Why? Backwards compatability. Before the release of the PS3, Sony promised it would never make a system that wasn't backward compatable. And then they did. A few PS3 consoles were released with limited compatability for the old system, but they were hard to get and are still hard to find.
For me, Blu-Ray didn't make up for the lack of compatability and the huge price difference. Now that the PS3 is the same price as the XBox 360 and has more and more games coming out for it, we are probably going to buy one this holiday season.
Xbox Live and its connection to Netflix was an advantage, but it isn't any longer as Sony is offering similar features and their online program is free. Downloadbale content for the Xbox 360 has been very nice, but I expect Sony to offer something similar soon.
A year ago, I would have argued vehemently for the Xbox 360. Now, the PS3 price is down and the game selection is improving. Sony may soon regain its role at the top of the heap.

Currently, which system would you recommend? PS3 or XBOX 360?
Both have received price cuts and have added numerous features to their service since they were released a few years ago. Plus, a bunch of new games have been released on both platforms.
I'm fairly uneducated in the features and prices of the PS3 and XBOX 360, so fill me in on which system you would recommend to the consumer and why. What features does each one have?
How does the internet work for each one, is it free or is payment required?
If it's easier for you, give the pros and cons of each.
Thank you!

I agree with you... but I think I'd still go for xbox 360. There goes the biggest game selection. Plus, yes, some games from xbox already had a version from PS3 but the games still looked better on xbox.
However, when it comes to high quality graphics, hands down, PS3. lol But I'd still pick xbox over PS3...

Your source is way out of date. XBox's support of HD-DVD is no longer an advantage since the Blu-Ray killed that format. The fact that the PS3 has Blu-Ray built in makes it the clear winner in the HD content field.
In addition, the article you quoted is almost 3 years old. So at least some of the facts in it (such as HD Content) need rechecked for accuracy.

Well, I would judge this comparison solely on features, not on specifications. I say this because there is no point in comparing the graphics unless you have a fixation on perfect graphics. Processing power is important, but the utilization of the power is captured in the games and thus will be comparable (but not equivalent) between the two systems.

I updated my term to be "360's Achievement system". Anyway, my point is that it is a good system, but I prefer Blu-Ray over Achievements.
Also, I agree that 90% or greater of the game library is multi-system, but there will always be a few exclusives. And I still have not heard of the ability for people to play the same game online from different systems.
For example, if I were playing Rock Band 2 on a PS3, I could no Co-Op with a friend playing Rock Band 2 (same game) on a 360 (different system).

@vladis: I did not take the PSP into consideration at all. The original question was regarding 2 consoles, so I limited my response to consoles only. However, the PSP and PS3 are both Sony platforms, so it is no surprise that Sony exclusives appear across their platforms. XBOX 360 is so much better than the Playstation 3. The graphics are a lot better quality. Plus we subscribe to Netflix, so we can watch movies that are available instantly using the XBOX 360 but currently Playstation 3 does not support Netflix. Plus the XBOX 360 is over a hundred dollars cheaper than the PS3. A PS3 will cost you $349.99, but XBOX 360 is only $199.99 unless you by a limited edition bundle pack. You do have to pay for the internet with the XBOX 360 whereas you get internet free through the PS3. I recommend XBOX 360, you won't be sorry.

Or...coooll...look at that car when I use my rocket luncher on it. Also, you can't judge a system based on your Netflix account. If you want to see a movie in great conditions...get a BluRay...watch it. But you can only do this on PS3.

You won't be able to tell the video quality difference, you are just repeating online reports there that are using magnifying glasses to compare.
PS3 pricetag is $299, not $349.99 as you state.

Ah yes, the age old battle rages on.

The shell can be changed to any system. You can have white PS3 or pink Xbox360.

If there's one thing a fanboy likes more that his console, its the chance to bash the opposition. Oh the joys of Coke vs Pepsi.

Owning both, I prefer the PS3.

Does the PS3 come with free internet access? I heard you have to pay for XBOX Live.

The Playstation Network is currently free, although I have heard rumors that this may change.
Also, I just received my disk for viewing Netflix movies on my PS3, and I'm loving it. I was previously using Playon to achieve this, and the quality wasn't great. With direct Netflix service, the video and audio are excellent, with no hiccups in playback yet.

Until the current generation of systems, we were diehard fans of the Playstation. My PS2 still runs and still has its place on my shelf of systems. However, I do not yet own a PS3. I own an Xbox 360 and love it.
